Early years
Speed's career began at ten years old in karting, his tenure there lasted from 1993 to 2001, winning the SKUSA Super Pro Pro Title for JM Racing driving a Tony Kart Swedetech Honda in 2000, winning the SKF Grand Nationals driving a 6-year-old kart, and three IKF regional titles. He also won the 2002 Rock Island GP in 125cc Shifter Karts. In 2001, he joined Formula Russell in the United States and became the champion. In 2002, he competed in both the Formula Dodge National Championship and Star Mazda, finishing third and eighth respectively.
After winning the Red Bull Driver Search program in 2003, Speed drove for Alan Docking Racing in the British Formula Three Championship. He became sick with ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease, during that year and was forced to return to the United States for medical assistance.
Despite his worsening colitis, 2004 saw two national championship titles for Speed, with him winning in the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup and later Formula Renault 2000 Germany. His performances culminated in a move from Can Artam to the inaugural season of GP2 Series for 2005, as the second highest producer at iSport International. Speed was later promoted to the first driver for the team after he gained five podiums and 12 top 5 finishes in 24 races. Nico Rosberg and Heikki Kovalainen were ranked third in the drivers' championship standings on the season.
Speed rode the first three races of the latest A1 Grand Prix series in Portugal, achieving a best result of fourth in the Portugal feature series.
