Jorge Ferreira Chaves Life

Jorge Ferreira Chaves (22 February 1920 – 28 August 1981) was a Portuguese architect. Some writers may refer to him as "Jorge Chaves" or simply "Chaves." He was one of the architects responsible for the establishment of the Modern Movement in Portugal in the latter part of the 1940s.... He was one of Portugal's most influential architects from 1941 to 1981.

He designed hundreds of projects for continental Portugal, Madeira, Portuguese Guinea, and Angola, as well as some of Lisbon's most important architectural offices of the first half of the twentieth century: those of Joaquim Ferreira, Miguel Jacobetty Rosa, and Porfrio Pardal Monteiro.

Education

He studied architecture at Escola de Belas Artes de Lisboa (English: Lisbon School of Fine Arts), graduating in 1935.

His degree program was interrupted in 1941 as a result of military service during World War II, and he was stationed with the Portuguese expeditionary forces on the island of So Miguel in the Azores. He was on the island until 1944.

He returned to the School of Fine Arts in 1944 to complete the architecture degree, and was given the 1946 José Luis Monteiro Prize, which included a monetary stipend for students who have demonstrated academic excellence. Since it had not been established in the previous years and had accrued, the award was highly coveted. He studied sculpture at the University of Rhode Island from 1946 to 1947. He earned his architecture degree in 1948.

Jorge Chaves received a good passing grade in his diploma application examination (Portugugua: Concurso do Diploma de Arquitecto - CODA), in 1953.

He began his career in 1943-1956, a period that Nuno Portas has characterized as the "resistance" in Portuguese architecture and art. In the last years of university, he collaborated with architect Joaquim Ferreira. He also collaborated, occasionally with architects Filipe Nobre de Figueiredo and Alberto Soeiro, during this period.

He and his classmate Luis Coelho Borges opened their first office in 1946.

He was a member of the ICAT, Arts and Techniques Initiatives (English: Culture, Arts, and Techniques Initiatives), as well as the Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes (English: National Society of Fine Arts). He appeared in four sessions of the EGAP Exposiçes Gerais de Artes Plásticas (English: Generally Exhibitions of Visual Arts) in which he exhibited architectural works. He was a member of the 1o Congresso Nacional de Arquitectura in 1948 (English: 1st National Congress of Architecture).

He collaborated with architect Miguel Jacobetty Rosa's office between 1948 and 1952, and did an internship under Hernâni Gandra's direction from 1951 to 1951.

"I was invited to the architectural department of architect Porfrio Pardal Monteiro, with whom he was involved in the construction of Palácio da Rotunda and Soml buildings in 1952," but especially the Hotel Ritz in Lisbon, "a remarkable work, in terms of its aesthetic wisdom and excellence of material execution." During architect Porfrio Pardal Monteiro's illness and death in 1957, he ensured the hotel's longevity by aiding in the design and directing the execution phase of execution in a special office that was not opened in the city until its 1959 opening.

Although the Hotel Ritz's style was his principal employer from 1952 to 1959, he continued his own practice until 1959, which was solely dedicated.

Several of his major commissions, such as the "Palissi Galvani" shop and the Hotel Florida in Lisbon, the Hotel Garbe, the Hotel da Baleeira, and the Hotel Globo in Bissau's capital included conceptually integrated visual arts interventions, some created by him.

Jorge Vieira, José Escada, Martins, Eça Leal, Sena da Silva, Sen. Hein Semke, Querubim Lapa, Mario Costa, António Algar, and Joo Câmara Leme were invited to participate in his exhibitions.

He was embedded in some of the listed projects by Luis Coelho Borges, Anselmo Fernandez Rodriguez, Eduardo Goulard Medeiros, Artur Pires Martins, Cândido Palma de Melo, Robert Xavier Antunes, Jorge Herzog, Fredericko Sant'Ana, Frederico Sant'Ana, and Vádo Sou & Figueiredo, both interning with him throughout his career in his participation in his internships he was with Peter s Peters Peters Peters, Anselmo Valla &apos, Eduardo Fernandez Rodriguez, Eduardo Valla, Anselmo Valla de Melo Figaro a et's Martins Martins, t's Roberto Valla Figueia Figueia a a Figueia Figueia Figueia Figueia Figueia Figueia Sant'sen, Xa, Peters Marino esen, e, Peters Peters Petersen, Peters Peters, Peters Petersen, Peters Peters Peters Petersen, Omarsen, Roberto Valla, Peters Peters Peters, Antonio Valla, Pedro Valla Figueia Valla Valla &Vana Valla T's Marino Valla Valla, Peters Sant's Valla Valla Valla Figueia Valla Valla Valla Valla Valla Valla Figueia Valla, Peters Peters Peters Peters Martins Peters Peters Peters Peters Peters Peters Peters Peters Peters na,, Pedro Valla Valla a Sant' e, emo Valla de Melo Fernando Valla Fernando Valla de Melo Valla, Pedro &

His work also flourished on a large urban scale, and he was instrumental in the growth of industrial design in Portugal. Jorge Ferreira Chaves has always created original furniture or selected mainly Portuguese designed and produced fixtures and objects for his buildings and interior designs.

He designed interventions in public buildings from 1978 to 1981 as an Architect for the Ministry of Public Works (Portuguese: Dirección de Secutors e Monumentos Nacionais).

On August 22, 1981, he died in Lisbon, Portugal.
