Jonathan Monroe Craig (born March 26, 1986) is a Canadian-American singer and songwriter best known as the former lead vocalist of Dance Gavin Dance, Emarosa, and Slaves, as well as the co-lead vocalist of the short-lived supergroup Isles & Glaciers.
To date, he has released two studio albums, two EPs, and a live album.
Craig has the vocal range of a baritenor, and his particular brand of soul-based singing has earned him acclaim.
Early life
Jonathan Monroe Craig was born in Minot, North Dakota, and he was named after him. Jonny said in a later interview with music website Eat Yo Beats, "my mom made me listen to shit when I was growing up, from Michael Bolton to some bizarre ass Christian rock bands" and then that it was this that became his main influence, rather than gospel music. Boyz II Men and New Found Glory are two of Craig's earliest heroes.
He was accepted into the school choir as a default student, but was eventually kicked out. He had a rough time staying out of trouble as a youth, and that "high school wasn't for him." He'd later explain that this was the reason he dropped high school and earned his G.E.D., and that he concentrated on music full time. "I just wanted an escape from a lot of the things when I was a child." In an interview with KLSU radio, Craig states that he wanted to get out of a lot of the issues that I was dealing with at home and stuff."
Personal life
Jonny Craig told Alternative Press, a 2013 acoustic set, the tale behind his album "Children of Divorce" was chronicled. Craig said his then-girlfriend was pregnant, and after an announcement that he didn't love her that months later, she left. He said he never heard from her again and was unable to see his child.
Jonny is also a father to Storm Parker-Monroe Craig, his first child with ex-fiancée Sydney England, as they revealed their pregnancy on March 27, 2020 and reported their son's birth on July 13 2020. Craig and England's relationship ended abruptly after a string of events, including Jonny's detention of a suspected domestic battery and the admission of their infant son into child protective detention, where he remains in state care.
Craig continued to identify himself as a Christian atheist, particularly in music, in an interview. He claims that all of his music is soulful and has some sort of meaning, mainly because he started performing gospel music with his church/school as a youth. Jonny Craig gives credit for his musical skills to his grandmother (Ruth Lyons) who, he says, "taught me everything I know about music, she was a Christian, super gospel." Her husband was a minister. Despite the fact that I may not agree with her beliefs, she taught me everything I know about music, and despite the fact that I do not subscribe to her faith, I believe in what she taught me."
Craig is inspired by soul music, mainly artists Aretha Franklin, Boyz II Men, and Craig David. He has also cited Motown acts and Mewithoutyou as influences. Craig has performed live covers of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" by Justin Timberlake, Marvins Room by Drake, and Cee Lo Green's "Fuck You."
Craig is a hero, and if you have yet to hear him sing, you have been missing out," Hollywood Music Magazine said.
Music career
Craig auditioned for bands after moving to Washington state and attending high school, but was ultimately turned down. Craig formed westerHALTS, a garage band from Tacoma, Washington, in 2000. In 2001, Craig's first well-known song with them, "Change, Leisure, and Retirement," was released. In an Alternative Press Podcast, he said that the band was "just something to help pay for weed, something I enjoyed doing over the weekends." On third, he took over as the lead vocalist for Tacoma-based pop punk band Ghost Runner. Craig said in high school, he met the Ghost Runner's guitarist on Third Avenue. Speak Your Dreams, the band's debut EP, received raves on January 4, 2005. Craig, according to AllMusic, was "the band's undefeated weapon, a vivacious singer." Craig isn't trying to be disappointed here, but his bandmates are always outshined."
After being kicked out of the band early in his career with Ghost Runner On Third, Dance Gavin Dance in an old blog post referred to Craig. Despite Craig's denouncement of those remarks, Dance Gavin Dance hasn't shucked those remarks, which they explain as the cause for all the band's difficulties and partly for his ex band Ghost Runner on Third. Sean O'Sullivan's departure from Craig's behavior was partially responsible for Dance Gavin Dance's performance, though other contributing factors were likely. Despite their past and present members of Dance Gavin Dance have since become friends. On the "extra thanks" section of the info-booklet, consider the Thief (O'Sullivan's previous band).
Jonny Craig's performance in Dance Gavin Dance's debut EP Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean and his debut full-length album, Downtown Battle Mountain, received rave reviews from critics. "Co-frontman Jonny Craig's regular yelping will change your mind forever," Allmusic said.
Jonny Craig invented the term Dance Gavin Dance in March 2007 and had intended to name his previous band, "Ghost Runner On Third" by that name. Jonny Craig was immediately recalled for A Skylit Drive's Lead Vocalist Jordan Blake after being kicked out of Dance Gavin Dance after the "Saints and Sinners Festival" in New Jersey. At shows and on their website, the band said he was not the current lead singer, and that the situation would only be temporary. It had only been two weeks since he left Dance Gavin Dance, which included Emarosa, leaving him without a lead singer.
Dance Gavin Dance parted with vocalist Kurt Travis and Jonny Craig, along with another original vocalist, Jon Mess, on August 18, 2010 to record a new album. The reunited squad would then begin a headlining campaign the following spring. Craig was expected to remain in Emarosa as well.
Craig's vocals were sampled on the track "Heels & Dresses" from their Break Lights mixtape album, which comes from the song "The Robot With Human Hair Pt. "I" is the "no. 1" in the book "Today" is the fabled tale. On the track "Bottled Up Like Smoke" from his Crossover EP and Crossroads album, Rapper Bizzy Bone sampled Craig's vocals, as well as portions of "I Still Feel Her Pt." "A Dream Is a Question You Don't Know How To Answer" is III, his debut solo album.
Emarosa revealed on April 11, 2011 that Jonny Craig will no longer be a member of the organization. "This decision has been a difficult one to make, but we hope it is in the best interest for the band going forward," the band's band said. On Twitter the day of the announcement, "Jonny Craig" was the most popular topic.
Jonny Craig was "kicked out" of Dance Gavin Dance yet again on August 13, 2012, for reasons relating to Craig's being "publicly scolded by Sumerian Records for numerous offences." Jonny's statement on his personal Twitter prompted the investigation.
Craig Owens, a choral composer from Chiodos, and Cinematic Sunrise singer Craig Owens, announced in early September 2008 that both he and Jonny Craig would have an EP record by the end of the year, as well as Vic Fuentes and others.
Alternative Press officially announced and revealed the name and lineup of this new project, Isles & Glaciers, on December 15, 2008. The Hearts of Lonely People, Casey Bates' first album, was released in Michigan in April 2009 and was released on March 9, 2010.
In part, a tweet said, "and people are asking why we will not do another I & G record." Craig Owens was sent out in 2011, as the MacBook affair was breaking out. According to this, Isles & Glaciers is unlikely to have any more albums, at least with a lineup that includes Jonny Craig.
In an interview, Jonny Craig said he'd be able to contribute to making a new record, but fears of being "the more famous members of the community" are among the group's "the most popular people in the company."

Craig revealed in an interview with MindEqualsBlown.net that he is attempting to work with Alex Deleon of The Cab on a B-side from his solo album. Craig revealed on January 16, 2011 that he would be taking an indefinite halt to "pursue the filming of his documentary," implying that all his current planned albums and tours would be cancelled. He later announced that he would miss the tours with Dance Gavin Dance and Emarosa. Craig revealed on January 21, 2011 that he would not be going to take this hiatus, saying: "You know what i do and im amazing at it." I've never been to GONNA STOP. "Now i know there's nothing out in the world for me," He said later.
Craig was featured in Alternative Press' issue #288, which was published on June 5, 2012.
Craig's personal e-mail in November 2012 contained some demos that had circulated on the internet; Craig said that the leaked material would not be included in his forthcoming solo EP. "Don't go to the songs that leaked are not what my album is going to look like," Craig's personal Twitter page says. I was just fucking around with some stuff."
Craig created an account on Indiegogo, where fans contributed to Craig's upcoming EP. In a recent interview, he also revealed that he had purchased Rise Records out of contract. On September 24, 2013, he released his solo EP, Find What You Love and Let It Kill You, as an independent release.
Jonny has released the Limited Edition of Find What You Love And Let It Kill You on November 26, 2013. The Special Edition includes a new track and two people who paid to be on the album from the Indiegogo campaign. He also released "Dirty Christmas" a new song that will be available on November 26, 2013. Jonny has said in an interview with rockforevernagazine that he wants to do "maybe two more tours (before recording), with me as the third spot on a Circa tour?" He also confirmed that his new album would be out next year. He also announced that he and Kyle Lucas are making an album together. Jonny announced on January 15, that he was starting a new band. He tweeted the band's name, Slaves, the following day. According to Under the Gun Review, guitarists Jason Mays, Alex Lyman, and Christopher Kim, drummer Tai Wright, as lead vocalist, and bassist Colin Vieira will appear alongside Craig as lead singers.
Artery Recordings has announced the signing of Jonny Craig's latest band, Slaves, which also includes members Alex Lyman and Christopher Kim (Hearts & Hands) with Tai Wright. Through Artery, the band's debut album was released in the summer of 2014. They've also published a short video trailer that features clips of the latest songs. Through Art We Are Equals, the band's debut album, was released on June 24, 2014 by Artery Recordings. Kyle Lucas, Tyler Carter of Issues, and Vic Fuentes of Pierce The Veil also appeared on the album. "The Fire Down Below," it's lead song, debuted on April 22, 2014.
Craig released the albums The Blueprint For Going In Circles in early 2015, alongside singer-songwriter Kyle Lucas and The Le Cube Sessions, respectively.
Slaves' new single "I'd Rather See Your Star Explode" as a result of a accompanying music video was released in 2017. Beautiful Death, the group's third studio album, was released on February 16, 2018. On January 18, 2019, an acoustic EP called "Revision" was released.
Slaves revealed that Jonny Craig had been fired from the band's official Twitter account on Thursday, January 24, 2019. “We all have struggles in our daily lives,” the message said, but for some, the issues are both physically and mentally demanding. Jonny has wrestled with heroin in his personal life, and most recently lost. It's also unfair for a band to rely on someone who can't depend on themselves. Addiction is a disease, and we hope Jonny gets the support he needs. Unfortunately, Jonny chose his heroin over the band and left them high and dry while awaiting their international flight while boarding a plane back home.
Jonny Craig is primarily a solo artist, with his second and most recent solo album "The Places We'll Never Be" on September 10, 2021.
