MailOnline's Liberty Smith took to the streets of London to find out the public's reaction to the new portrait (pictured inset) of King Charles, unveiled yesterday. But whilst some people have praised the painting as 'magnificent', the modern approach has left others, well, perhaps seeing red. Commissioned back in 2020 to celebrate the then-Prince of Wales's 50 years as a member of The Drapers' Company, the painting is the work of renowned artist Jonathan Yeo. It depicts His Majesty wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, of which he was made Regimental Colonel in 1975. At almost two-and-a-half metres tall, the portrait will be on display at the Philip Mould Gallery in London from Thursday 16 May, but will people be queuing up to see it?

Queen Camilla praised King Charles ' new portrait and its creator when she saw it for the first time before it's presentation at Buckingham Palace yesterday. The painting, by renowned artist Jonathan Yeo, is the first official portrait of the King completed since his Coronation last May. However, it was actually commissioned three years earlier than that to celebrate the then-Prince of Wales' 50 years as a member of The Drapers' Company. It depicts His Majesty wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards , of which he was made Regimental Colonel in 1975, while holding a sword as a butterfly lands on his shoulder. The Queen is said to have looked at the painting and told Yeo: 'Yes, you've got him.'

From Queen Elizabeth II as a seemingly toothless pensioner, to an apparently semi-naked Prince Philip , royal portraits have not always gone to plan. Whilst many of the worst have been unofficial, there have been some that were done with the royals ' blessing. Yesterday, experts hailed Jonathan Yeo's depiction of King Charles - the first since he became the monarch -as 'the most progressive royal portrait in a very long time'. The fiery red painting (inset) shows His Majesty in the uniform of the Welsh Guards as a butterfly hovers over his shoulder. Is Charles' portrait a warning about the future of the monarchy? How artist behind King's fiery painting used the red of the Welsh Guards and an endangered butterfly to 'tell multiple stories'

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 15, 2024
King Charles ' first portrait as a monarch has been unveiled, but experts have suggested that the artist has hidden deeper meaning in the key details. The 8.5ft-tall oil on canvas by Jonathan Yeo was revealed to the public and the Royal family at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace today. In the painting, the King can be seen standing in his Welsh Guards uniform with a sword in his hand and a butterfly on his shoulder, while the whole canvas is awash in a deep red colour. Yeo has made no secret that he wanted to break from tradition for this sitting, and make this portrait more 'dynamic and contemporary'. That is why viewers can see some of the traditions upheld, such as the military outfit and the sword, but with a twist of modern in the striking red colour and the butterfly.

The self-taught artist behind King Charles' first post-Coronation portrait: Jonathan Yeo, married to a former Hollyoaks star and the son of scandal-hit ex-Tory MP Tim Yeo, has painted the likes of David Cameron, Tony Blair, Nicole Kidman and Idris Elba

Jonathan Yeo, 53, is behind the portrait of the King, depicting him in the uniform of the Welsh Guards' in a blaze of scarlet and fiery red hues said to emulate the transition of a butterfly as Charles undergoes a metamorphosis from prince to ruler. It was originally commissioned in 2020 but completed after Charles ascended to the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022. The bold and highly-praised work is not the first royal project he has undertaken - nor the first famous face he has rendered in his unique style, which blends modern digital techniques with those of traditional painting.

'They Hans Solo'd the King!' Charles' fiery portrait is compared to classic Star Wars scene as social media is flooded with memes

Sci-Fi fans said that the King had been 'Hans Solo'd' in reference to a scene in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in which the space pirate is frozen in carbonite due to the red hue covering Charles' body in the painting. The portrait was also likened to the villain from Ghostbusters 2, Vigo the Carpathian, a 17th century medieval tyrant whose ghost took up residence in his own portrait. Others joked that the painting looks like it has 'been attacked by Just Stop Oil '.

King Charles unveils red, fiery painting of himself as his first post-Coronation portrait by artist Jonathan Yeo who included butterfly to capture his 'metamorphosis from Prince to King'

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 14, 2024
King Charles today unveiled the first completed official portrait of himself since the Coronation at Buckingham Palace. The painting, by the renowned artist Jonathan Yeo, was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate the then-Prince of Wales's 50 years as a member of The Drapers' Company. It depicts His Majesty wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, of which he was made Regimental Colonel in 1975. Today, Yeo spoke of a butterfly on the portrait echoing Charles's 'metamorphosis' from Prince to King during the process - and the monarch joked that it was nice to know he was a chrysalis. Yeo added: 'People often say is there a secret to doing a good portrait? And I say I don't know really. Actually I think there is one, and that's having an interesting subject to start with. And you couldn't ask for a better one than this, other than Her Majesty.' As he gestured towards Camilla - whom he painted in 2014 - the comment was greeted with much laughter in the palace. The canvas size - approximately 8.5ft by 6.5ft framed - was carefully considered to fit within the architecture of Drapers' Hall and the context of the paintings it will eventually hang alongside. Yeo had four sittings with The King, beginning when His Majesty was Prince of Wales in June 2021 at Highgrove, and later at Clarence House.
