Johnny Gill Career

Music career

Gill's recording career began in 1982, when his childhood friend, Stacy Lattisaw, begged him to record a demo. This demo came into the custody of Atlantic Records' president, and his first self-titled debut album, which was released shortly thereafter on Atlantic subsidiary Cotillion Records, fell into his custody. Gill appeared on the duet album Perfect Combination with Stacy. In 1985, Cotillion Records, Chemistry's second solo album was released.

Gill began a new chapter in his career in 1987, when Michael Bivins first recruited him to join New Edition. Bobby Brown had been voted out of the group, and Gill was brought on to replace lead singer Ralph Tresvant, who had been rumored to be heading out to pursue a solo career at the time. Gill was the only New Edition contributor who was not from Boston. The group developed a more mature, adult sound with Gill, the group's oldest member, who spent time with Tresvant and postponing the debut of his solo career), on the album Heart Break. "If It Isn't Love" and the Gill-led "Boys To Men" are two heartbreaks.

Although launching as a new jack swing star in 1990, he released "My, My, My," "Fairweather Friend," and "Wrap My Body Tight."

Gill released Prosecu, a solo project in 1993, which included the songs "Quiet Time to Play," "A Cute Sweet Addiction," and "I Know Where I Stand," among other items.

Gill released Let's Get the Mood Right, which included the song "Love in an Elevator" and the single "Maybe" in 1996. Johnny Reunited with New Edition in 1996 and released the album Home Again.

He worked with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat in 1997 to form LSG (Levert/Sweat/Gill), a multi-platinum debut album that resulted in the release of Levert.Sweat.Gill's final album LSG2 in 2003. He reunited with New Edition in 2004; the pair signed Bad Boy Records and released the album One Love, which featured the single "Hot 2Nite" on the album.

Gill returned with Still Winning, which featured "In The Mood," "Just The Way You Are," "It Would Be You," and "2nd Place," his 15th solo album. Gill left Fontana Records and started J Skillz Records in 2014, on which he debuted Game Changer, a new album. Several adult R&B radio hits were released on the album, including the singles "Behind Closed Doors" and "Game Changer." On "This One's For Me And You," his New Edition coworkers appear on "This One's For Me and You." In February 2017, Gill joined Fantasia as an opener for Charlie Wilson's In It To Win It tour, which began in February 2017. Gill's album Game Changer II debuted on September 6, 2019.
