Rufo argues that gay oversaw an admissions policy that was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, which found it discriminated against Asian and white applicants in an essay published on City Journal. Following the SC's ruling on affirmative action, Gay said she would follow the mandated reforms, but that the action only strengthens the school's commitment to 'continuing to open doors.' After the assassination of George Floyd by a police officer in 2020, Gay also established the Task Force on Visual Culture and Signage. Several recommendations for participating in racial injustice's 'historical reckoning,' including the need to reform'spaces dominated by white male stereotypes.' According to the paper, Annenberg Hall was one of the places that needed to be redesigned, citing that none of the 23 portraits displaced depict women - and that none of the three depict white men.' Gay initiated an initiative in 2022 to 'dename' spaces that had been deemed racist by faculty and administration officials, who would make their decisions 'based on the belief that a namesake's activities or beliefs were "abhorrent" in the context of current values.' Since then, there have been calls for several buildings to be renamed, including Winthrop House, named after John Winthrop, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and a slave owner.
