Despite the fact that the bulk of Augustinian monasteries had latrine blocks and hand-washing facilities, not unlike those of ordinary working people. According to experts, the difference in parasitic infections in friary gardens could be attributed to monks manuring crops in friary gardens with their own faeces, or buying fertiliser containing human or pig excrement. The study, which was conducted by researchers from the University of Cambridge's Department of Archaeology, is the first to compare parasite prevalence in people from the same medieval group who were living in different lifestyles.
