Broadcasting career
Sterling began his broadcasting career in Baltimore, where he appeared as the play-by-play announcer for the 1970-71 NBA season. He played by-play for Morgan State University football, a position he played from 1971 to 1978.
In 1971, Sterling began broadcasting in New York as a talk show host for WMCA. He later served as the WHA's New York Raiders, the WFL's New York Islanders, the NHL's New York Islanders, the NBA's New York Islanders (where he was paired with Bob Lawrence), and the ABA/NBA's New Jersey Nets (where he was paired mainly with Mike DeTomasso). On WMCA and WINS radio, Sterling served as both the pre-game host and co-host on cable segments with Mel Allen for a stretch.
Sterling's Nets and Islanders games for WMCA, WVNJ, WOR-TV, and SportsChannel New York continued his WMCA talk show coverage from 1975 to 1978. Sterling spent nine years in Atlanta covering the Braves (1982-1997) and Hawks (1981-1989) for Turner Sports during his first stint in New York.
On WABC radio in 1989, Sterling returned to New York to broadcast the Yankees' games on WABC radio. He has been with the Yankees since, most recently appearing on WFAN radio and its affiliates in the New York Yankees Radio Network. He has been paired with Suzyn Waldman since 2005; recent announcing partners include: Jay Johnstone (1989–2001), Michael Kay (1992–2001), and Charley Steiner (2002–2004). The Yankees announced a switch to WFAN in 2013, but the pound was retained. He is currently under control through the 2022 season.
On October 18, 2021, the pound signed a new WFAN deal for 2022, with the possibility of a postponed schedule. Sterling announced on June 6, 2022, that he would begin working on a reduced schedule in the second half of the MLB season, primarily due to the fact that he is traveling to road games outside of the northeastern United States. He'll continue to drive to Fenway Park, Citi Field, and Oriol Park at Camden Yards.
