John Simmons (June 14, 1918 in Haskell, Oklahoma – September 19, 1979 in Orange, New York) was an American jazz bassist.
Life
Simmons appeared on trumpet first, but a sports injury prevented him from playing the instrument. Instead, he picked up bass, securing his first professional gigs just four months after starting on the instrument. He began playing with Nat King Cole and Teddy Wilson (1937-1937), then travelled to Chicago, Illinois, where he competed with Jimmy Bell, King Kolax, Floyd Campbell, and Johnny Letman. He appeared with Roy Eldridge in 1940 and spent 1941-42 with Benny Goodman, Cootie Williams, and Louis Armstrong. He appeared in the CBS Blue Network Orchestra from 1942-43, later worked with Duke Ellington (1945), and Illinois Jacquet (1946), as well as doing lots of studio work.
He continued to perform as a studio musician into the 1950s, and also performed with Erroll Garner (1950-52), Harry "Sweets" Edison (1955), and the Rolf Ericson/Duke Jordan band (1956). Phineas Newborn was one of his last relationships; ill health caused his departure not long after.
Simmons also appeared on Lester Young, James P. Johnson, Hot Lips Page, Billie Holiday, Tadd Deparis, Sidney DeParis, Sidney Deparis, Don Byas, Don Byas, Don Byas, Bill DeArango, Thelonious Monk, and Erroll Garner, as a result of the above.
He died in September 1979 at the age of 61.
He is the father of Joan Simmons, Kathleen Simmons, Addie Simmons, and Sue Simmons of NBC New York.
