Lockdown trysts, parliament liaisons and romps amid the red boxes: Harold Wilson's affair puts him on the list of politicians including Hancock, Major, Prescott, Ashdown and Lloyd George who have proved that power is the greatest aphrodisiac of all

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 11, 2024
It emerged last night that former prime minister Harold Wilson (right) had an affair during his second stint in Downing Street with his deputy press secretary, Janet Hewlett-Davies (inset). But he was by no means the first politician to have a romantic liaison whilst climbing the ladders of power. Edwina Currie revealed her four-year affair with Sir John (both pictured left in 1994) in her diaries in 2002. The sexual liaison began when Sir John was a Government whip and Ms Currie - who later became a health minister - was a backbencher. In 1983, Cabinet minister Cecil Parkinson was forced to resign from his position as trade and industry secretary when it emerged that he was having an affair with his secretary Sara Keays (bottom left). Ms Keays was pregnant with his child, Flora, who grew up with severe epilepsy. In 2006, John Prescott, then the deputy prime minister, admitted to a two-year affair with his secretary Tracey Temple (bottom right, with Mr Prescott). In June 2021, then Health Secretary Matt Hancock's career came crashing down when CCTV footage was published showing him passionately kissing his aide, Gina Coladangelo (bottom centre with Mr Hancock), inside his office. It emerged that the pair, who were both married and had known each other since meeting at university, had been engaged in an affair.

According to Roger Lewis, fat people should fly more than screaming babies. No, it isn't - I'd rather cut off my arm than get to airport scales, argues Marion McGilvary. Who do YOU agree with? In our poll, have your voice

It's also true that airlines are cramming an increasing number of "slimline" seats into Economy sections, but that's not surprising considering that they are in fact supermodel sizes. So unsuitable is this stout for those with a larger girth, as airlines such as Air France are advising the st out to buy an extra seat 'if your builder does not allow you to sit comfortably in a single seat.' And this week, Finnair is allowing us to tackle the extra pounds by weighing passengers at the departure gate. Humiliating? Unquestionably, the answer is no.

The 'ruthless political operative' at the heart of New Labour: How spin doctor Derek Draper played a key role in Tony Blair's landslide 1997 election victory - as big figures in former government bid him farewell at his funeral

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 2, 2024
Derek Draper's name became synonymous with the Coronavirus pandemic's horrific toll in his last years. With Covid-19, the former 'ruthless political strategist' spent more than a year in hospital beginning in early 2020 and eventually not recovering. However, it was as a central New Labour figure that he was remembered by his former colleagues after he died at the age of 56 last month. The respect shown today by the presence of Labour's leading lights in the 1997 election at Primrose Hill, north London, was evident. Derek, who was instrumental in Labour's victory over John Major's Conservative government, was honoured today by figures led by former Prime Minister Tony Blair (inset today with wife Cherie). The New Labour spin doctor attained a slew of influence in the 1990s but he was best known for his involvement in the 'lobbygate' scandal. He began working as a researcher for Blairite Peter Mandelson, who attended his funeral. Derek joined GPC Market Access in 1996 and created Progress with Liam Byrne, a former minister who went on to become an MP. 'Derek Draper was someone you always wanted by your side': Tony Blair leads tributes to 'ruthless political operative' who was New Labour spin doctor before forming media power couple with TV star wife Kate Garraway

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 5, 2024
Mr Draper, who died of long-term coronavirus, was married to television presenter Kate Garraway, and was one of Britain's most prominent media couples. Sir Tony was one of the leading New Labour figures to pay tributes to Mr Draper, who served with Blairite Lord Mandelson and established the Progress group with Liam Byrne, who went on to become an MP. He called him a "tough, sometimes ruthless strategist" and a "brilliant advisor," but he also said he was a "loving, compassionate, and good natured man." Gordon Brown, another former Prime Minister, wrote on social media: "So sad that after such a long fight, Derek Draper has lost his life as a result of Covid'.' 'I will remember him as brilliant, inventive, and multitalented,' and our thoughts are with Kate, Darcey, and Billy.' Mr Draper was 'a big character,' according to Alastair Campbell, a fellow influential New Labour figure of the 1990s. Angela Rayner takes swipe at Starmer as she insists Labour will take 'a team' into government if they win the general election and says 'Keir's no Tony Blair'

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 16, 2023
As she was asked about Sir Keir Starmer's friendship with Labour Leader Angela Rayner, she said she denied him. Labour's deputy leader said Labour will bring "a team" into government if it wins the next general election. Ms Rayner also spoke of becoming deputy prime minister under Sir Keir if Labour is successful, comparing their ties to 'an arranged marriage'. Ms Rayner is expected to miss some of her shadow cabinet positions as Sir Keir conducts a post-election reshuffle of his top team, according to sources. According to other sources, Labour deputy leader Ed Miliband may have been sent to the levelling up brief as part of a multi-national portfolio. This has been likened to Lord Prescott's time as the party's last deputy Prime Minister under Sir Tony's leadership. Nevertheless, Ms Rayner's comparison of her relationship with Sir Keir, which has historically been tense, has been dismissed by the Blair/Prescott team this morning.

Is Keir Starmer planning to make Angela Rayner the new John Prescott?

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 29, 2023
Instead of her job covering the Cabinet Office, the Opposition leader is said to be considering giving Ms Rayner the shadow housing and levelling-up brief. According to the Times, this move, which may happen as soon as next month, will give the party's Red Wall heartland seats in the North and Midlands to the party's goal of recovering its Red Wall heartland seats. It would also compare Mr Prescott, the deputy Labour leader and Deputy Prime Minister under Blair, to Margaret May, who served as Minister of State for Environment, Transport, and the Regions. However, it would require demoting Lisa Nandy, the former shadow foreign minister, for the second time in fewer than two years.

COMMENT DAILY MAIL: Labour's ostensible war against private schools

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 1, 2022
DAILY MAIL COMMENT: John Prescott, the great Jaguar-driving, croquet-playing class warrior, once referred to private education as the source of social injustice in this world. He also loathed selective schools in general and grammars, particularly because he skipped the 11-plus and sent a love letter as a child to a grammar school student, which revealed all his spelling mistakes corrected. Prescott's nostalgic spirit is back, nearly two decades later. This time, it's privately trained Sir Keir Starmer who is involved in the spiteful politics of envy.

The White Knight Starmer mounted his high horse: HENRY DEEDES

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 9, 2022
Poor Rishi Sunak is the product of HENRY's illiteracy. At Cop27, he's being attacked for one minute by the big boys. He's back in the Commons on Friday, securing the tracks of snail slime left by Sir Gavin Williamson's brief return to Cabinet. The atmosphere of comedown that hanged over the Prime Minister at PMQs yesterday was palpable. When Tony Blair returned from schmoozing assorted Silvios and Sergios in Europe, he was forced to leave the House to placate yet another of John Prescott's Olympic-grade political flops. L'affaire Williamson, which culminated with Sir Gavin's resignation from the Cabinet the previous evening after allegations of bullying, had generated a lot of buzz on Labour's benches.

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 28, 2022
Boris Johnson will be 'ploding his comeback,' with a glint in his eye, according to Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner, amid financial uncertainty under Liz Truss. Ms Rayner said markets were 'in free fall' after three weeks of Ms Truss' premiership, during her final address at Labour's conference. She accused Prime Minister and Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng of attempting to'plunge us into confusion in the search of their dogma.' Ms Rayner told Labour members that it was a 'great honour' to make the final address before the party's 'Red Flag' anthem's traditional singing. 'Totaling the week as John Prescott did back in the day, although I do look better dressed in a suit.' 'I want to do him proud,' she said.
