Bird brains!Dozens of species 'clouded by racism and misogyny' are officially renamed to avoid glorifying slave owners and Confederate generals

Hundreds of species of birds whose names have been 'clouded by bigotry and misogyny have been officially reclassified in order not to glorify slave owners and Confederate generals. The American Ornithological Society (AOS) announced Wednesday that it would change the names of the flying animals after a 'highly charged and widely circulated' discussion over the now-controversial figures after which the birds were named after. According to AOS President Colleen Handel, the group will rename bird names that prove to be "exclusionary and risky today." Last year, the AOS formed a commission to discuss and determine which birds' names needed to be changed. More than 100 species of the Americas have been identified as needing new monikers, and the effort will continue in 2024.
