John Gwynne Career

Broadcasting career

Gwynne was a commentator for the PDC darts tournaments, which are broadcast on Sky Sports. In February 2013, he declared that he would step down in the summer. The 2016 World Championship was Sky Sports' last tournament. In 2014, he was inducted into the PDC Hall of Fame. In 2014, Gwynne began reporting on Eurosport for BDO darts tournaments, including the Six Nations Cup, Winmau World Masters, and the BDO World Championship. He made occasional commentary appearances on Sky Sports during the early rounds of the PDC World Championship in the years that followed; he did not do so in 2020; he did work extensively on Talksport's radio coverage of the event.

In 1980, Gwynne's first media job was covering speedway at Belle Vue in Manchester for Piccadilly Radio. He migrated to north-west football and was a fan of Darts coverage on a weekly basis, Talking Sport.

Cricket Call was his first paid commentary role for Lancashire County Cricket Club matches. He did this from 1988 to 1991.

Gwynne established The Darts Line in 1989 and 1990, with the help of darts entrepreneur Dick Allix, for which Gwynne delivered darts news and tournament information to a paid phone number that people would dial.

The Darts Line opened the doors to the darts world, and before long Gwynne was judging darts tournaments for regional ITV shows with Dave Lanning. When the darts split occurred in 1993 and Sky Sports began covering the WDC (later to become the PDC) tournaments, Lanning and Gwynne were selected as commentators. Sid Waddell was still working with the BBC but not until the 1994 World Matchplay Championship that was not affiliated with Sky.

At the Circus Tavern in 1994, Gwynne and Lanning spoke about the first WDC World Championship. For the first time on the World Matchplay at Blackpool in July 1994, Gwynne, Lanning, and Waddell met together.

On Saturday's Gillette Soccer, Gwynne remained a regular match reporter. He was also giving expert reviews on William Hill's online betting operation and In_play Radio service beginning in April 2014.

On the finals day of the inaugural World Senior Darts Championships in 2022, he made his return to the commentary box. Robert Thornton and Martin Adams' final match on February 6th was his last ever commentary.
