GREG ALLAN, a music critic and 'uncool dad,' presents his must-listen albums for 2022

This is the third time I've seen one of my Facebook 'best of' music lists published outside of Facebook's social media page, which is exciting for me. My run is a little late this year, but I don't want to disappoint my readers here at the Daily Mail. One of the bands reached out to me after a slew of reader comments from last year's list, which was...cool. I've decided to imbue this piece with a 2023 feel and give you all a look ahead in the world of music this year.

The beloved Red Hot Chili Peppers were named with the Global Icon Award at the 2022 MTV VMAs, nearly 40 years since the company was established. On Sunday evening, frontman Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist John Frusciante appeared on stage to accept the award at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Smith devoted the award to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who received the award with his band last year and died in March at the age of 50.

Taylor Swift performed well at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, earning the best longform video for her 10-minute version of All Too Well. Dylan O'Brien, who appeared in the music video, joined the 32-year-old megastar as she began her acceptance speech: "I had directed and written my music videos before this, but I had never made a short film before." So I want to start out by saying thank you to Sadie Sink, Dylan O'Brien, my film director, and the rest of our amazing crew for loaning me their brilliance, their talent, and their time. We put our entire hearts into this endeavor, hoping to produce something that might be worthy of the admiration displayed by this artist. Thank you for this beautiful reminder that we did something right. 'I love you guys.'

The Shindig's Red Hot Chili Peppers are still resenting

www.mtv.com, August 28, 2022
Anthony Kiedis, a poet, once said he couldn't stop because he was addicted to the shindig. Kiedis has been a fixture of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for almost 40 years. The guy is always on motion, often shirtless, and rhyming "let me tell you what I'm talking about" with "you're trying to be a lady but you're walkin' like a sauerkraut." He's addicted to the shindig. RHCP brought the excitement to the main stage of RH's latest hit, "Black Summer," and the funk-pop cut from 2002 that immortalized the phrase, "Can't Stop" — as a tribute to being named a winner of the Global Icon Award. Smith honoured late Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died in March, with the word "Taylor" drawn on his bass drum within the outline of a hawk; the same award went to their Foo Fighters.

The 2022 VMAs will air live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, but the spirit of California will be present for at least a portion of the program. That's thanks to the Golden State institutions, Red Hot Chili Peppers, who will be able to win the coveted Global Icon Award and perform live at this year's showcase on August 28. Can you smell the beach already? The quartet, made up of singer Anthony Kiedis, guitarist John Frusciante, bassist Flea, and drummer Chad Smith, will all be nominated in the Best Rock category this year.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers brought their Global Stadium Tour to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which is just outside of New York City. And with the clock ticking before show time, the band's highly coveted bassist Flea was impossible to miss as he went from his hotel in Manhattan, past eager followers, to his awaiting taxi for the short ride to the concert. Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen, the band's journey around the world, is in favor of their twelfth and thirteenth studio albums, as well as guitarist John Frusciante's return to the band for the second time.
