John Villiers Farrow, KGCHS (born in 1904) was an Australian-born American film director, producer, and screenwriter.
In 1957, he was nominated for Best Writing/Best Screenplay for Around the World in Eighty Days, and in 1942, he was named Best Director for Wake Island.
He had seven children by his wife, actress Maureen O'Sullivan, as well as actress Mia Farrow.
Early life
Farrow was born in Sydney, Australia, and the son of Lucy Villiers (née Savage; 1881-1907), a dressmaker, and Joseph Farrow (1880-1955), a tailor's trimmer. His mother died before he was born. Both his parents were of English descent. Farrow began studying at Newtown Public School and Fort Street Boys' High School, and then began a career in accountancy.
He appeared to have sailed "all over the Pacific," and fought in Nicaragua and Mexico revolts. He enrolled at St. Ignatius College (later known as the University of San Francisco) in 1923 but left after one month.
He travelled around the Pacific, including Fiji, Hawaii, and Guam. On his arrival in Hollywood, Farrow fabricated his education, claiming he had attended Newington College in Sydney, Australia (he lived in a street below its ovals), Winchester College in England, and the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. This information is still available on several newspapers and websites.
Personal life
Farrow, a playboy in his youth, was associated with Dolores del Ro and Diana Churchill, among others. Felice Lewin was born in 1924 and died on August 18th. Felice Patricia Farrow (1925-1997), they had one daughter, Felice Patricia Farrow (1925–1997). In September 1927, the marriage ended in divorce. In 1928, Farrow and Lila Lee began a friendship and became engaged. However, they never married and their relationship ended in 1933 after Lee discovered that Farrow was being unfaithful to her.
In 1934, he became engaged to actress Maureen O'Sullivan, and the two married on September 12, 1936. Farrow and O'Sullivan had seven children, including four daughters, who went on to become actresses, Mia (born 1948), Prudence (born 1949), Tisa (born 1951), and three brothers, Michael Damien (1942–1958), Patrick Villiers (born 1946). Maureen O'Sullivan was his second wife after he converted to Catholicism and received an annulment of his first marriage. Farrow often wrote about Catholic themes. He would later deny that he was converted to Catholicism as he was baptized as an infant by his Irish nurse. However, he was not born Catholic and didn't know about his infant baptism until after his 1929 adult baptism.
Farrow died of a heart attack in Beverly Hills, California, on January 27, 1963, at the age of 58, and was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.
