What an amazing mash-up Opening Night is. It's almost as if this oblisively obtuse new musical, which opened in the West End last night, was supposed to sabotage its dazzling leading lady, Sheridan Smith. And yet, if you can't hold a good woman down, you have no chance whatsoever against Smith's unstoppable charisma. It's based on a long-forgotten John Cassavetes film of the same year from 1977, it's about a Broadway actor Myrtle's nervous breakdown after being aware of the death of a young fan outside the theater.

Diners are left wondering if they should support 'drunk' Sheridan Smith, who staggered out of her own West End play and collapsed onto the pavement at a hilarious moment

This is the moment diners, bar patrons, and pedestrians were left stunned and wondering if they could help as a 'drunk' Sheridan Smith stumbled out of her own West End performance and collapsed onto the pavement. The shocking scenes, which were witnessed by disoriented revellers on their phones, were part of Smith's latest film in which the actor, 42, plays alcoholic Broadway hero Myrtle Gordon. Opening Night is based on John Cassavetes' 1977 film of the same name, and follows a theatre company's plans to stage a new play as their leading lady is shaken by tragedy.
