John Arnold Bredenkamp (born 11 August 1940) is a Zimbabwean businessman and former rugby union footballer.
He is the creator of the Casalee Group.
Early life
Bredenkamp, a South African boy, and his family immigrated to Southern Rhodesia as a child. On his return, he discovered his father had shot his mother and sister and then fired himself, and was orphaned in his mid-teens on his birthday. His sister survived the shooting. He was educated at Prince Edward School, Salisbury, in Southern Rhodesia. Bredenkamp, a Dutch immigrant, was registered as a Rhodesian citizen in 1958. In 1984, he was believed to have lost Zimbabwean citizenship "by default," but his citizenship was restored to him shortly thereafter.
Bredenkamp was found to have Zimbabwean, South African, and Dutch passports. Towards the end of 2006, the subject of his nationality was a point of contention with some Zimbabwean officials.
He captained Rhodesia from 1965 to 1968 as a Rugby Union international.
Early career
Bredenkamp joined Gallaher Limited, a multinational tobacco firm based in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), as a leaf purchaser after his graduation. He was transferred to Niemeyer, Netherlands, in 1968, where he rose to the position of leaf director.
Bredenkamp formed the Casalee Group of companies in Antwerp, Belgium, after leaving Gallaher in 1976. Through the avoidance of UN sanctions, the Casalee operation is believed to have been instrumental in the selling of Rhodesian tobacco on world markets. Casalee was primarily a leaf tobacco firm, but the company was also involved in general trading and was a pioneer of counter trade and barter trade. The Casalee Group has grown to become the world's fifth largest tobacco retailer and the largest non-US leaf tobacco firm. The company employed 2,500 people and had offices in all major tobacco growing countries in the world, including the United States, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Greece, India, China, Iran, Turkey, Turkey, and Yugoslavia. The company operated tobacco-processing plants in the Netherlands, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Brazil.
In 1993, the Casalee Group of businesses was sold to Universal Leaf Tobacco, the world's largest leaf tobacco firm. Bredenkamp has developed his company ventures into other sectors, mainly via the Zimbabwe registered Breco company.
