Johann Rupert Life

Johann Peter Rupert (born 1 June 1950) is the eldest son of business tycoon Anton Rupert and his wife Huberte.

He is the chairman of Richemont, a Swiss-based luxury-goods company, and Remgro, a South African-based firm.

He took over Compagnie Financiere Richemont's CEO role as of 1 April 2010.

He was ranked as the second richest person in South Africa on the Forbes Rich List for 2019 with his fortune reportedly falling from US$7.3 billion to his family.

Personal life

Rupert grew up in Stellenbosch, where he studied economics and company law at Paul Roos Gymnasium and the University of Stellenbosch. He dropped out of college to pursue a career in finance, but the university gave him an honorary doctorate in Economics in 2004.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University's honorary doctorate was given to him in 2008. Rupert rarely gives interviews and shuns public appearances, according to the Financial Times and Barron's description as "reclusive." In 2006, the same newspaper announced him as "Rupert the Bear" for forecasting a global economic crisis.

Rupert has expressed sympathy for and faith in the concept of a universal basic income.
