The day I broke free: John Boyne reflects on how he walked away from an unhappy life- and discovered his true purpose

I was a few months away from my 32nd birthday and felt more lost than I had ever been in my life. I'd published my first two books, but they weren't well-received, but they hadn't sold well. My then-publisher had a draft of my third book rejected right away by the author. Before it had even started, my career seemed as if it was over. Worse, I was devastated at the end of a relationship. We had been going on and off since August 2000, the week my debut novel was published - but the real story had already ended, but definitively, no longer exists. I had started taking antidepressants and was mixing them with alcohol all the time.

Rather than 'adding to pile-on' in the trans debate, Boyne, a boy in the Striped Pyjamas, has apologised to Father Ted's creator Graham Linehan's apologies for his 'could have used his platform to help him,' rather than 'adding to pile-on' in the trans debate, as Roisin Murphy's dispute seems to have changed the writer's mind

John Boyne (left) of Ireland (right) seems to have buried the hatchet with anti-gender activist Graham Linehan (right) and applauded the former's efforts to assist women and children, gay people, and lesbians. On X, formerly known as Twitter, the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas author wrote a long letter of apology in which he reminisces about their past indiscretions. It comes after the trans lobby blasted former Moloko singer Róisn Murphy for speaking out against puberty blockers on her private Facebook page this week. Boyne, 52, a prolific writer who is also gay, found himself on the same team as Linehan in attacking Ms Murphy, although several of her gigs have been cancelled after she posted a grovelling apology online. Boyne expressed regret for a 2019 article in The Irish Times, in which he was dismissive of Graham Linehan's role in the trans debate.
