About

Faust, a German writer who was associated with the Sturm und Drang literary movement and best known for his poetic drama, is a German writer. The Sorrows of Young Werther, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, and Hermann and Dorothea are among his other works.

Before Fame

He learned many foreign languages, including Latin, Greek, French, Italian, English, and Hebrew as an infant. He uninhibitionably studied law in Leipzig, devoting the bulk of his time and resources to writing poetry and finding love in the 1760s.

Trivia

Faust's masterwork sparked symphonies, oratorios, and operas by composers such as Wagner, Mahler, Liszt, Schumann, and Berlioz.

Family Life

Christiane Vulpius, his long-time mistress, had several children before marrying in 1806. Goethe married Baroness Ulrike von Levetzow following Vulpius' death in 1816 (sadly, the two never married because Levetzow's mother disapproved of their union).

Associated With

Goethe's literary work had a major influence on Carl Jung, a Swiss psychoanalyst.
