Johann Friedrich Gmelin, a young man who was possibly living in the Netherlands at the time Linnaeus' "apostle" of Carl Linnaeus, began collecting plants on his behalf, and undertook a plant-collecting mission to "Persia" on his behalf. He published several textbooks in the fields of chemistry, pharmaceutical science, mineralogy, and botany later in life. Carl Linnaeus' posthumous 13th edition of Systema Naturae from 1788 to 1793 was also edited and published. Many new species were listed without a scientific name by John Latham in his A General Synopsis of Birds, as illustrated here. Gmelin's book is cited as the source for more than 290 bird species and a variety of butterfly species.
