Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson (born 19 August 1963), better known as Joey Tempest, is a Swedish singer best known as the lead singer and main songwriter of the rock band Europe.
"The Countdown," "Rock the Night," "Cherokee," "Merokee," and "Superstitious" are three of his author hits.
Early life
Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on August 19th, 1963. With a tape recorder, he'd sit in front of the television or radio and try to find songs from the United Kingdom or the United States that he liked and listen to them over and over again. He learned how to play the piano and a friend of his father's taught him three chords (A, D, and E) on his sister's acoustic guitar.
Larsson competed in go-cart racing and played football and ice hockey; he also finished fourth in the Junior Cart Race, a Swedish championship. Larsson grew up in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, like many of Europe's other members. Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin were two of his main influences. Larsson performed in a variety of bands, including Jet, Blazer, Made in Hong Kong, and Roxanne, during his teens. Larsson played rhythm guitar and bass guitar in lieu of lead vocals at the time, rather than lead vocals.
Personal life
Tempest and his sons James Joakim and Jack Johnston Larsson live in London. Tempest spoke with Bruce Dickinson about his decision to live in London on the latter's BBC 6 Music radio show in 2009. He does not have any social media pages apart from Europe's official ones on their website.
"Are you ever embarrassed by any of the hairstyles and clothes you wore back in the day?" asked Liam Allen of BBC. "We were young, we were MTV era, and we were one of the best bands on MTV," Tempest replied. To be honest, I just wanted to look like Robert Plant.
Career
Larsson first settled in 1979 with the play "Joey Tempest," influenced by William Shakespeare's tragicomedy The Tempest as well as the song "Sparks of the Tempest" by US prog rock band Kansas. With guitarist John Norum, bassist Peter Olsson, and drummer Tony Reno, he formed the band Force. Forces in Stockholm's suburbs quickly began establishing a name and a fanbase. They changed their name to Europe in 1982 and captured the music competition Rock-SM. Hot Records' first draw was a record. Europe unveiled its self-titled debut studio album in 1983 and 1984, with Tempest as the frontman.
Tempest wrote several international bestsellers during his time in Europe. The final Countdown" was the largest ever; it dominated the charts in 26 countries, sold 15 million copies, and was the musical focus of the millennium's and 1988 Summer Olympics; it was the ringtone in hundreds of thousands of mobile phones around the world. Following the Final Countdown, Europe released two more studio albums, including Out of This World (1988) and Prisoners in Paradise (1991), shortly after their last concert in March 1992. Europe ended their tour in Portsmouth and did not appear together again until New Year's Eve, 1999 to 2000.
Tempest's solo debut album, A Place to Call Home, was released in 1995. He recalled it as his "singer/songwriter album." Dan Sundquist's album was recorded in Stockholm and London with Swedish musicians. On one of the tracks, Europe bandmate John Norum gueststarred. Tempest also performed guitar on the album. A Place to Call Home in Sweden reached platinum, and it was a huge success worldwide.
He began his first European tour as a solo artist later this year. He had been nominated for a "Best Swedish Artist" Grammy Award the previous year. "A Place to Call Home," "Under the Influence," "We Come Alive," "It's Let's Change On Me," and "Don't Go Change On Me" were four songs from the album.
Tempest's second solo album, Azalea Place, was released in 1997. Richard Dodd, a producer known for producing musicians including The Travelling Wilburys and Tom Petty, recorded his next solo album in Nashville. Tempest wrote all of the text, and so was the new album, which was shared with others. Chris Difford of Squeeze and Will Jennings were among those to have been included in this list. Tempest said, "Azalea Place was mainly written in the studio and was hence more improvised and experimental." As singles, "The Match," "The One In The Glass," and "If I'd Only Known" were released. "The Match" became one of Sweden's most popular songs, and the album has achieved gold status.
Tempest's third solo album named after him appeared in the fall of 2002. Malcolm Pardon and Fredrik Rinman were the production team behind the album's success. Susan Miskovsky, Lisa Miskovsky, and Stakka Bo have all worked with the team. Chris Difford, a former Europe citizen Mic Michaeli, and guitarist Adam Lamprell were among the group on the album, as well as guitarist Adam Lamprell. Tempest jammed with English musicians who had previously appeared in Konk Studio, the Kinks old London studio, where Tempest jammed with English musicians who had previously appeared with Massive Attack. "Kill For A Girl Like You" (B-side of the first single "Fortun") and "Sometimes" were produced during this session. Mic Michaeli, a Swedish musician, stayed in Stockholm this week. This session was called "superhuman." Tempest continued to work with Adam Lamprell in a London temporary studio after that.
Tempest writes poetry, "Dreamless and Magnificent have a lot of London in them." Both London and Dublin influence Losers. It's likely that living there would be tumultuous. They're tough towns, and I'd never have written the songs I did without living there." Some songs can also be related to his homeland, reflections on life in the United States, and meeting new people.
Europe has announced that after disbanding, they would relaunch their own line, which will be called The Final Countdown. Start from the Dark, Europe's sixth studio album, was released in 2004. Secret Society, the sequel, was released in 2006, with the following albums Last Look at Eden in 2009, Bag of Bones in 2012, War of Kings in 2015, and Walk the Earth in 2017.
