Joey Deacon Life

Joseph John Deacon (1920-to-date) was a British author and television star.

Early life

His mother would ask him to count the motor cars passing by the front of their house, and Joey would reply by blinking for each vehicle that passed. During his time in hospital, he demonstrated his intelligence several times in experiments by blinking or pointing with his nose.

When he was four years old, Deacon underwent some surgical procedures on his legs at St. Childe's Hospital, but these were not fruitful. His mother died of tuberculosis at six years old, and Joey's grandmother was raised by his grandmother. He was admitted to Queen Mary's Hospital in Carshalton, then moved to Caterham Mental Hospital (later St Lawrence's Hospital), where he remained for the remainder of his life after eight years. He stayed in close contact with his father until his father's death.

Later life

The four men maintained their close friendship in the hospital for decades, and in 1974, they were the subject of a Prix Italia and BAFTA award-winning drama film directed by Brian Gibson titled Joey. This was followed by a second documentary film made for Blue Peter.

The team began working on a new book as soon as Tongue Tied was finished. Deacon wanted to write a work of fiction, a book about a disabled man who wanted to learn how to walk so he'd be able to walk up the aisle and marry his woman. It was never published.

The four royalties from Tongue Tied and donations had enough funds to move to a bungalow on the Caterham hospital grounds in 1979, where they were able to live more independently. Blackburn and Roberts retired to a house outside the grounds, where they lived with the support of support workers two years later.
