Joe Swanberg (born August 31, 1981) is an American independent film producer, writer, and actor.
Swanberg, who is best known for micro-budget films that make a strong use of improvisation, is regarded as a central figure in the mumblecore film movement.
His films often focus on relationships, sex, electronics, and filmmaking, and he is often credited with launching Lena Dunham, Greta Gerwig, and The Duplass Brothers' careers.
Early life
Swanberg was born in Detroit, Michigan, and was raised in Georgia and Alabama. He graduated from Naperville Central High School in suburban Chicago and attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale as a film major, earning a bachelor's degree in 2003. He spent time as a youth at Hollywood Video.
Career
Swanberg directed his first film, Kissing on the Mouth, in 2005, but it was on a modest budget. He continued it with LOL (2006), which was Swanberg's first time working with actress Greta Gerwig. Gerwig and Swanberg collaborated on Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007), which also featured filmmakers Andrew Bujalski, Ry Russo-Young, and Mark Duplass; and Swanberg's first film collaboration with animator and actor Kent Osborne; and Nights and Weekends (2008), on which Gerwig shared a directing credit. Alexander the Last was Swanberg's next film, and later cast Gerwig opposite Ben Stiller in his 2010 film Greenberg.
Swanberg produced seven films in 2010: Uncle Kent, Caitlin Plays Herself, The Zone, Art History, Silver Bullets, Privacy Setting, and Autoerotic, co-directed by horror filmmaker Adam Wingard after spending the entirety of 2009 on Silver Bullets. Uncle Kent debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011 and then later this year, while Silver Bullets and Art History premiered at the Berlinale in February. After screenings at film festivals, the majority of the 2010 films premiered theatrically in 2011. Four of these were later included in Joe Swanberg's Collected Films 2011, a DVD boxed set from the music and video company Factory 25.
Olivia Wilde, Jake M. Johnson, Anna Kendrick, and Ron Livingston appeared in Drinking Buddies, written and directed by Swanberg in 2012. Alicia Van Couvering and Andrea Roa produced the film, which was shot by Beasts of the Southern Wild cinematographer Ben Richardson. Magnolia Pictures acquired the film shortly after it was released in SXSW.
Swanberg shot Merry Christmas, starring himself, Melanie Lynskey, Lena Dunham, and Anna Kendrick from Drinking Buddies. This was the first of his films to be shot on 16mm film rather than digital. At the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, the film premiered.
Digging for Fire, the director's first film at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, stars Jake Johnson and was the first film to be cast. The Orchard released the film on August 21, 2015.
Swanberg wrote, produced, and produced Easy, an anthology film for Netflix. In 2016, the series premiered in 2016 and ended in 2019. Easy featured several of Swanberg's regular collaborators, including Jake Johnson, Joe Lo Truglio, and Nicky Excitement.
Win It All was written by Swanberg and Jake Johnson in 2017. Johnson, Aislinn Derbez, Joe Lo Truglio, and Keegan-Michael Key appear in the film. On March 11, 2017, South by Southwest hosted its world premiere. Netflix unveiled it on April 7, 2017.
Swanberg, a well-known proponent of Internet-based distribution of independent films, has made his 2011 film, Marriage Material, available for free on his Vimeo site. On his Vimeo page, he also announced Build the Wall, starring Kent Osborne and Jane Adams.
Swanberg founded Analog Pizza and Video Store, a VHS video rental shop in Chicago's back room.
