Joseph Leslie Sample (February 1, 1939 – September 12, 2014) was an American pianist, keyboard player, and composer.
He was one of the founding members of the Jazz Crusaders, the band that became simply the Crusaders in 1971, and remained a member of the band until its final album in 1991 (not including the 2003 reunion album Rural Renewal). He began a fruitful solo career and appeared on many recordings by other artists and groups, including Miles Davis, George Benson, Jimmy Witherspoon, B. B. The Supremes, King Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, and the Supremes.
Sample's music included jazz, gospel, blues, Latin, and classical styles.
Personal life
His son, bassist Nicklas Sample (with ex-wife Marianne), who is a member of the Coryell Auger Sample Trio, which includes Julian Coryell and Karma Auger, was one of his survivors. He also left three children, Yolanda, and three stepssons: Justin, Jamerson III, and Jordan Berry.
Sample was Catholic, and he helped Catholic charities and churches all his life.
