Mixon was ranked as a five-star recruiter and the top-ranked running back in the country by the Rivals.com recruiting network. He committed to the University of Oklahoma in January 2014 to play college football. He had 47 offers and ultimately chose Oklahoma over Alabama, California, Wisconsin, and UCLA.

College career

Mixon attended and played college football for the University of Oklahoma from 2014 to 2016. Since being charged with misdemeanor assault in October 2014, he was suspended from the Oklahoma football team for the 2014 season.

Mixon made his redshirt freshman year by playing in all 12 games with three starts. Mixon held a 76-yard touchdown reception in his first game as a freshman running back for the first time. In addition, he carried for 27 yards on five attempts against Akron. He had 154 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns against Texas Tech on October 24, 2010. He had 136 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the annual rivalry game against Oklahoma State. In the 2015 season, Oklahoma qualified for the College Football Playoff. He was limited to four rushing yards and 11 passing yards in the Orange Bowl in the semifinals against Clemson. He ran for 749 yards on 110 passes, averaging 6.8 yards, during the 2015 regular season. He rushed for seven touchdowns and made his career-long carry at 66 yards. He had 25 receptions for 345 yards, averaging 13.8 yards per reception and four touchdowns.

Mixon decided to forego his remaining two years of eligibility and enter the 2017 NFL Draft after the 2016 season.

Professional career

Some analysts and scouts rated Mixon as a first-round talent, but others expected him to be selected in the third or fourth round due to his prior participation in college. He was ranked fifth best running back by NFLDraftScout.com, the fourth-best by Sports Illustrated, and third-best back by Pro Football Focus. Despite being a good candidate, the NFL declined to invite him to the NFL Scouting Combine. According to ESPN, the Cincinnati Bengals met with Mixon over the weekend in order for them to have a chance to discuss his character in depth. Mixon performed all of the combine tests and concluded the positional drills at Oklahoma's Pro Day on March 8, 2017.

In the second round (48th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft, Mixon was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. He was the fourth candidate to be chosen in the draft this year. He was regarded as a first-round talent by some scouts, but several teams pulled him out entirely due to character issues after a previous assault on Amelia Molitor, a female student at Oklahoma. "I believe in second chances and giving players a chance of redemption, but I also believe playing in the NFL is a privilege, not a right." For me personally, I think that privilege is lost among males who have a history of assaulting women." "No 2017 draft pick enters the league under more intense scrutiny or controversy" after Mixon was drafted, according to ESPN analyst Dan Graziano. "Instead of purchasing a Bengals ticket this year, buy the $50 or more you would have spent on the ticket and give the proceeds to a non-profit that works to eliminate violence against women," the editorial board of Cincinnati TV station WCPO blasted the plan. The Bengals agreed Mixon to a four-year, $5.45 million deal with a signing bonus of $2.10 million.

Mixon made his NFL debut against the Baltimore Ravens on September 10, 2017. He had eight rushes for nine yards and three touchdowns for 15 yards. With 18 carries for 62 yards against the Green Bay Packers in Week 3, his role in the offense increased. He made his first career rushing touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in Week 5, a five-yard rush in the fourth quarter. For the first time in his career, he scored over 100 rushing and 91 receiving yards in Week 8, with 67 of them coming on a long run-after-catch play in the second quarter. Mixon led the NFL in Week 12 with a career-best 114 passing yards against Cleveland, 37 rushing yards against the Tennessee Titans, and 49 rushing yards against the Denver Broncos, while passing just 2.79 yards per carry over the course of three weeks but two touchdowns. In the 31–27 victory, Mixon finished out his rookie season with 96 rushing yards against the Baltimore Ravens. Mixon finished with 626 passing yards, 4 touchdowns, 30 receptions, and 287 receiving yards in his rookie season.

Mixon was found to have tested positive for COVID-19 on January 5, 2022, and therefore could not participate in the season finale. Mixon finished the 2021 season with a career-high 1,205 passing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns, as well as 42 receptions for 314 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Mixon's 13 rushing touchdowns were the most by a Bengals player since Ickey Woods had 15 in 1988.

Mixon ran for 72 yards and kicked his first career pass attempt, a 6-yard touchdown to Tee Higgins, in the Los Angeles Rams' 23-20 loss. He was ranked 38th by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022.

Mixon had 145 scrimmage yards in the Bengals' season-opener in the 23–20 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
