Joseph P. "Joe" Del Campo (born July 4, 1943) is an American FBI agent and private investigator best known for his appearance on the reality competition show Survivor.
Early life
Del Campo was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1943. He attended Father Judge High School in Philadelphia and then enrolled at nearby La Salle University, majoring in Spanish. He spent time in Madrid studying abroad as part of his college curriculum. In 1967, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at La Salle.
Del Campo joined the United States Naval Reserve in the summer of college, during which he attended Aviation Officer Candidate School at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. After issues with his sinuses prevented him from completing his pilot training, he was transferred to Miami, where he began working in intelligence. One of his jobs was to discourage Cuban spies from infiltrating the refugee population into the United States.
Personal life
Del Campo, a widow with three children, is a widower. In his spare time, he and Linda Worsham, Vice President of The Excalibur Group, volunteer to rescue Yorkshire terriers in the Vero Beach area. He has also contributed to Vero's Voice, a newspaper that serves communities along the central Atlantic coast of Florida.
Career
In 1971, Del Campo first joined the Naval Reserve as a lieutenant (junior grade). He began working in Urbana, Illinois, as a special agent. He will spend the next 25 years with the Bureau, serving in Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, Miami, and Philadelphia.
He was once partnered with respected FBI agent John E. Douglas during the 1970s, when they were sent to Milwaukee to serve as bank robbery investigators. Del Campo obtained a Master of Science degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1975 while working as an investigator of organized crime.
One of Del Campo's career's most memorable events came on a winter's day when he saved a child from being held hostage. A Chicago criminal had made his way to Milwaukee and shot a few police before killing a young boy hostage. Del Campo climbed onto the roof of a house and shot the fugitive as he tried to escape with the child. The fugitive was struck in the back of the neck and the child was unharmed, but he did not get hurt.
