Life and career

Applegate was born in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, which is a suburb of Pittsburgh, and is part of the Irish Catholic Church. Applegate graduated from Moon Area High School in 1982. She enrolled at Temple University in Philadelphia as a freshman and graduated with a degree in television and film as a sophomore.

Applegate briefly worked as an actress before being caught up in journalism. She appeared in a television version of A Pocket for Corduroy as the mother in 1986. Applegate appeared in a television adaptation of the Mercer Mayer children's book There's a Nightmare in My Closet in 1987, as well as the main character's mother.

Applegate, a high school student audience, appeared on Close Up on C-SPAN in the early 1990s. She later spent time in San Francisco as a radio and television traffic reporter. Applegate hosted Good Morning Arizona on KTVK in Phoenix from 1993 to 1996. Applegate also appeared on KTVN in Reno, Nevada, as an anchor. Applegate met Rob Nikoleski in Reno; he was the sports news director at a competing Reno station, KOLO. They married and divorced eight years later.

Applegate appeared on the television network MSNBC at the station's launch in 1996 as the first face on the station's debut. On the main NBC network, she anchored MSNBC Live and Weekend Today. On the Today show, she also served as a substitute host. She appeared on Later Today with Florence Henderson and Asha Blake in late 1999. In 2000, the show was cancelled.

Applegate joined WFXT in Boston in mid-2001. By early 2002, she anchored Fox 25 News, a short-lived network, and moved to the 5 p.m. slot. She anchored the Fox 25 Morning News for about a year beginning in September 2003; she then moved to WNYW in October 2004.

In 2005, Applegate joined WNYW as co-anchor of the station's morning program, Good Day New York. She was with the company for three years, but she was fired in 2008 by Rosanna Scotto. Applegate left the station right away. She appeared in the Broadway musical Chicago once more on May 28, 2008.

Applegate began to work as a back-in anchor on all-news WCBS radio in 2009. On Sirius XM Radio's Martha Stewart Living Radio channel, she hosted Living Today, filling in for another former Good Day New York anchor, Mario Bosquez. Joan Hamburg of WOR in New York and Howie Carr on WRKO in Boston also hosted a radio talk show hosted by Applegate.

Applegate returned to television news in September 2009 when he joined News 12 Long Island as an evening co-anchor. She was able to leave News 12 in order to join WPIX with three months remaining on her one-year contract. On weeknights, the Tribune Company-owned station named her as sole anchor of its redesigned 10:00 PM newscasts; she began her duties as a correspondent on October 11, 2010. Applegate's hour-long 5:00 PM newscast, which was launched in the fall of 2011, was also anchored by the station.

Michael Kay, a television broadcaster for the New York Yankees, married Applegate in New York City on February 12, 2011. Rudolph Giuliani, former New York mayor, officiated the service at the Plaza Hotel and was officiated by Rudolph Giuliani.

Applegate expected a baby on November 21, 2012, which was conceived by way of a gestational surrogate. On December 19, 2012, she announced her resignation and left WPIX. Caledonia, her daughter, was born in January 2013. Charles Robert, her son, was born in November 2014 and was named Charles.

She and her family are residents of Greenwich, Connecticut.
