Watch out Kate! So far, England has had five Queen Catherines, but it hasn't always been well

Millions of people now think of her as plain Kate. However, if her husband, Prince of Wales, takes the throne in due course, we will have a sixth Queen Catherine. She is already playing the part, balancing her royal duties with a healthy dose of humor - and a lot has been reported about her discipline in the face of an overwhelming public interest. However, as the author of a new book, The Catherine Code, points out, today's young royals' challenges are nothing to the snake pits occupied by their historic predecessors. They were playing a royal game in which one wrong move could have resulted in death. One Catherine was killed and a third was arrested - incorrectly - of poisoning the king. According to author Bob Casey, five royal namesakes were sick and often mistreated by their husbands, and most often mistreated by their husbands.' Watch out Kate!

RICHARD KAY: From the bedridden crime writer in The Singing Detective whose naked body is slathered in lotion by an alluringly stunning Joanne Whalley to the all-knowing Dumbledore, the wizarding school Hogwarts of the Harry Potter franchise's, to sadistic crime boss Eddie Temple in Layer Cake, his roles were as diverse and obscure as the man himself. He was the master of the disarming one-liner, assuaging one interviewer who wondered if it was difficult to portray the homosexual author Oscar Wilde in a TV film that it was straightforward since he used to be gay himself. "I had to give it up after a dramatic pause," he said. 'It made my eyes water.'

Historian Andrew Lownie struggles to find out if Scotland Yard ever investigated Prince Andrew's allegations against him

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 28, 2023
EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Andrew Lownie has failed in his attempt to find out if Scotland Yard ever investigated Prince Andrew's allegations against him under the Freedom of Information Act. He asked if police had looked into her allegations of being trafficked to the United Kingdom, and, if not, who had ordered that the probe be dropped. The Met replied, "We cannot confirm or deny that details in connection with any suspect's allegations are known." Lownie says, although Andrew has always denied the allegations and settled her civil lawsuit with no admission of guilt, the public is entitled to know if the police ever bothered to look into the allegations against the Duke of York.' We need certainty. Let's hope that the police do not consider that the Royal Family is above the law.'
