Early life and education

Joan Smalls Rodrez was born and raised in Hatillo, Puerto Rico, with her two siblings. Eric Smalls, her father, is an accountant and comes from Saint Thomas, and she is a West Indian of African and Irish origins. Betzaida Rodrón, the child's mother, is a social worker who lives in Puerto Rico and has a Spanish and Tano roots. She also has distant Irish and Indian ancestry. Smalls were initially interested in modeling as a youth and then began to compete in local competitions. During this time, she was working with a New York company that told her she would have to correct her teeth in order to succeed; during that time, she went to college. Smalls graduated magna cum from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She then moved to New York City to begin her modeling career after graduating.

Career

She was recruited by Elite Model Management in 2007 and worked in commercial modeling positions such as Nordstrom, Liz Claiborne, and Sass & bide. She left Elite and joined IMG Models around the world in 2009, where she shifted her attention to runway work. She was selected as a Givenchy exclusive for Riccardo Tisci's Spring/Summer Haute Couture show in January 2010, and her modeling career gained traction.

Smalls has created haute couture and ready-to-wear collections for top designers and fashion stores, including Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Isabel Marant, Burberry, Murello, Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta, Morneta, Bastien, Balmain, DVF, Valentino, Monte Montan, Robert de Couillard, Yves Saint Laurent, William Gondo, Manuel Manuel, Obé, Perpetu, Andre She has appeared in shows for fashion week in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. In late 2017, Jeremy Scott, the creative director of the fashion house Moschino, unveiled Joan Smalls as the new star of the new Moschino fragrance, Fresh Couture Gold, shot by Giampaolo Sgura. This was Joan Smalls' first fragrance launch.

At the 9th Annual "Style Awards" in September 2012, Smalls was named "Model of the Year" for the year. Iman, a supermodel, presented the award to Smalls. Smalls ranked #8 on Forbes magazine's "World's Top-Paid Models" list in 2013, grossing $3.5 million.

Smalls will bring her signature style and look to the W Hotel guest experience through special appearances and distinct partnerships to exclusive in-room and digital media.

Estée Lauder added Smalls to its list of global beauty ambassadors in 2011. She is the first Latina celebrity to be signed to a global campaign for the brand. "The word supermodel has overused," Estée Lauder's global creative director said, but Joan is the only woman of our time. She can go from girl-next-door to superchic-tough-strong, and she is all of that.

Smalls joined Estée Lauder in 2015 to produce 12 New Matte Lipsticks for the cosmetics giant. The Supermodel inspired the 12 new colors, which included a diverse range of reds, pinks, chocolatey browns, and a dark burgundy (all permanent additions to the Estée Lauder collection).

Smalls appeared as co-host (along with model Karlie Kloss) of the MTV fashion series House of Style. In the Vogue's June 2011 issue, she was included alongside singer Bruno Mars. She appeared in Ricky Martin's "It's Alright" music video in 2006. In November 2013, she co-starred with actor Michael K. Williams in the American rapper ASAP Rocky's track "Phoenix," written by Asia Argento and Francesco Carrozzini and directed by Carrozzini. She appeared in Beyoncé's "Yoncé" video in 2013. Joan Smalls x True Religion was a denim collection created in 2015 by Smalls. Smalls was photographed by photographer Steven Klein for the True Religion collection ad campaign. Smalls joined with the Smart and Sexy brand in 2017 to produce a line of lingerie and swimwear that would be available at Walmart.
