Early life
Maria Aspiras Soho was born in San Fernando, Philippines, on March 27, 1964. Abelardo Soho, a government employee, and Maura Aspiras, an agriculturist, are her parents. Sixta "Apo Ittang" Aspiras and ConcepciĆ³n "Cion" Soho's grandmothers inspired her in sharing tales.
Soho studied mass communication at the University of Diliman, Philippines. Luis Beltran, one of Soho's teachers, inspired her to complete her education and practice journalism in Manila.
Career
Soho joined GMA News and Public Affairs in January 1985. The first voice-over report by Soho was a feature article about the inauguration of the Manila Line 1 from Baclaran to Monumento. Soho was later sent to the defense and military ranks.
Soho received a Bronze Award at the New York Film Festival in 1991 for her reporting of a hostage crisis in Cagayan Valley, the first for a Filipino. She has also been given the Ka Doroy Valencia Award from the Kapisanan ng mga Pilipinas. In 1994, she was awarded the Grand Prize of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union for her coverage of a breaking news story. During the centennial celebrations, Soho was included in a list of 100 Filipino Women of Distinction.
Soho co-produced the one-hour documentary television show I-Witness, which she co-presented from 1999 to 2004. "Kidneys for Sale" and "Kamao" were among the first Filipino journalists to receive a Peabody Award in 1999. For the 2001 "Saksi Sa Kasaysayan" documentary, she received the Asia Television Award for Best News and Current Affairs Special.
The Peabody Awards in 2014 recognized Soho's GMA news services Kapuso Mo. Jessica Soho and State of the Nation with Jessica Soho for their coverage of Super Typhoon Yolanda. Reader's Digest Asia notes that the state of the nation also won for Most Trusted News Presenter by Soho twice.
During its 67th commencement exercises in April, Soho was awarded an honorary doctorate in humanities by the University of Northeastern Philippines.
