Life and career
Carmichael was born in Boulder, Colorado, United States, to a Jewish family. Bob Carmichael, his father, is also a photographer who shoots during Maroon 5's tours. Annie, Jesse's younger sister, has a younger brother. He began playing the guitar in junior high rather than the keyboards (for which he is known in the band Maroon 5). Carmichael, Mick Madden, and Ryan Dusick formed Kara's Flowers together with Adam Levine, Mickey Madden, and Ryan Dusick, a time when Reprise Records was a label. They debuted The Fourth World, their debut (and only) album. The album found little success after the company's demise, Carmichael and Levine attended Five Towns College. Carmichael began playing the keyboards while in college. However, two years later, Levine and Carmichael were still struggling and returned to California.
In 2001, the members of Kara's Flowers, as well as guitarist James Valentine, went on to form Maroon 5!
Carmichael's touring keyboardist, PJ Morton, announced on March 9, 2012 that he would take a break from playing with Maroon 5 for an undetermined amount of time to focus more on "music and the healing arts" rather than his keyboard duties. However, a few months later, Carmichael revealed that he would return to the band after the group's Overexposed Tour concluded, increasing the number of members to six after Morton's promotion. He returned to the band in time for their fifth studio album V (2014).
On September 9, 2016, Carmichael formed Circuit Jerks, a side project founded by musician and producer Jason Lader and released the extended play EP1.
