Jerry Richardson Life

Jerome Johnson Richardson Sr. (born July 18, 1936) is an American businessman, public benefactor, former NFL player, and former National Football League executive (NFL).

He founded the Carolina Panthers franchise, which he owned for 23 years.

Early life and college

Richardson was born in Spring Hope, North Carolina, and he was named after him. He enrolled in Wofford College, which is located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, after high school in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Richardson was a member of Little All-America in 1957 and 1958. With 241 receiving yards against Newberry in 1956, he is the first holder for touchdown receptions in a season (9 in 1958) and in a career (21). He scored 72 points on nine touchdowns, 12 extra points, and two field goals as a senior at Wofford. Richardson says being voted team captain in 1958 was his highest honour. He was selected as a receiver for Wofford's All-Time Football team in 1983.

Richardson was active on campus, including President of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, President of the Inter-Fraternity Council, and member of the SCA Cabinet. Distinguished Military Student, Scabbard, and Blade Military Fraternity, Sigma Delta Psi, Blue Key National Honorary Fraternity, and Who's Who's Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges were among the awards he received while at Wofford.

Personal life

Richardson was hospitalized in Charlotte at Carolinas Medical Center in early December 2008, one month after receiving a pacemaker. Richardson, who had a history of heart disease and had undergone quadruple bypass surgery in 2002, was placed on a donor waiting list for a new heart two days later. On February 1, 2009, he received a new heart and has since recovered from the transplant.

Hugh McColl, a businessman from Richardson, and businessman Hugh McColl purchased the University of North Carolina's football field at Charlotte's football stadium in 2011. After an additional $10 million donation, the stadium was dubbed Jerry Richardson Stadium in 2013. Richardson has long been known as one of the region's most popular and low contributor to charitable causes.

Richardson was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He was inducted into the South Carolina Business and Sports Halls of Fame in 2006 and 2015.

In 2016, he funded the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts in honour of his wife of more than 60 years on the Wofford College campus. In 2017, he sponsored Wofford's state-of-the-art Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

In 2021, he donated $150 million to Wofford College. It is the most significant gift in Wofford's history. This gift is intended for the college's endowment, with a strong emphasis on need-based financial assistance and experiences for Wofford students. Wofford's contributions, which also included capital improvements, have surpassed $260 million. Wofford has the most influence in his life's success, according to Mr. Richardson, with no other influence "even close."
