Career
Shirley was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, and began playing drums for the band Apostolic Intervention at an early age. He was then recruited by Steve Marriott to join Humble Pie, the then-forming rock band, when he was seventeen years old. Shirley was the group's first original member to perform on every album. He's also worked on Steve Marriott's solo projects, such as Packet of Three, and was a co-founder of the famous 1980s band Fastway. "Say What You Will" was Shirley Co-Wrote Fastway's most popular hit, "Say What You Will."
Shirley joined Waysted and reformed Humble Pie in the United States, with Charlie Huhn as the vocalist after leaving Fastway. Shirley was the only original group member of the Humble Pie project, which featured Jerry Shirley. They had been operating with a bouncing line-up for ten years before disbanding. During this time, Shirley spent time as a disc jockey at WNCX, a historic rock station in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1999, Shirley returned to the United Kingdom. Greg Ridley, the original bassist, guitarist, and vocalist Bobby Tench all returned to Humble Pie in 2000. Humble Pie's eleventh studio album Back on Track (2002) was released by the bandmate, Steve Marriott, and he also appeared in a memorial concert for former Humble Pie bandmate Steve Marriott. He has appeared with the Deborah Bonham Band and appeared on her album Duchess in recent years.
He appeared on Syd Barrett's two solo albums in 1970. He appeared on the debut album The Madcap Laughs as well as Soft Machine members Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper, and Robert Wyatt. Jerry shared drums with Wyatt and drummer Willie Wilson on this first album. He performed with David Gilmour and Richard Wright, later sharing drums with Willie Wilson.
