Jermaine "Huggy" Hopkins (born August 23, 1973) is an American actor who has appeared in films such as Lean on Me, Juice, and Phat Beach.
Career
Hopkins, who was born in Elizabeth New Jersey, began his acting career as a child. Hopkins came back to acting after his mother took him to a casting-call audition in New York for the Warner Bros. feature Lean on Me, in which he played Thomas Sams, a misguided drug-abusing high school student. He appeared in Juice, directed by Ernest R. Dickerson, and Tupac Shakur as Steel alongside Khalil Kain, Omar Epps, and Tupac Shakur.
Hopkins appeared in the HBO film Strapped, which would be Forest Whitaker's first directorial debut. Hopkins appeared on episodes of Murder One and Moesha, as Dupree on The Wayans Bros. before focusing on his next film Def Jam's How to Be a Player, starring Bill Bellamy and comedian Pierre Edwards.
Hopkins was arrested on December 15, 2011, for attempting to buy 200 pounds (91 kg) of marijuana from an undercover cop. He served up to five years in prison before being sentenced to 30 days in prison and three years of probation. Hopkins was arrested in Apex, North Carolina, on October 13, 2017, with 5.7 pounds (2.6 kg) of marijuana in the trunk of his vehicle. Hopkins pled guilty to criminal possession, according to TMZ.
