Jeremy Dean Stephens (born May 26, 1986) is an American mixed martial artist competing in the UFC's Featherweight division.

He currently ranks #9 in the UFC featherweight rankings as of October 21, 2019.

Personal life

Stephens is of Mexican descent maternally. He has two children and is a good friend of former UFC fighter Anton Kuivanen. Stephens has discussed how self-doubt has impacted his life and how his failures have spawned suicidal thoughts in the past.

Stephens was arrested in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on October 5, 2012, the date Stephens was supposed to fight at UFC on FX: Browne vs. Bigfoot. Stephens was charged with murder and robbery as a result of an incident in Des Moines, Iowa, in 2011. Stephens was then extradited to the Polk County jail, where he was held for 15 days before being released. The majority of the charges were later dismissed, but Stephens pled guilty to one count of disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.

Mixed martial arts career

Stephens began mixed martial arts as an amateur and began full-time training at the age of 18. Stephens was the UGC and MCC Lightweight champion.

Stephens was disqualified via second round armbar submission in his UFC debut against veteran Din Thomas at UFC 71 on May 26, 2007.

Diego Saraiva won his first match in the UFC by unanimous vote in UFC 76.

After defeating Cole Miller via second-round TKO at UFC Fight Night 12, Jeremy won his second game inside the Octagon.

Jeremy took on Spencer Fisher, a former coach and friend of The Ultimate Fighter 7. Stephens was dissatisfied by a unanimous decision.

Rafael dos Anjos, 91, recovered after the humiliating loss with an emphatic victory over BJ's black belt and potential UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos. In the first two rounds, he was out-grappled, but he took a huge uppercut on dos Anjos that knocked him unconscious. With this victory, he was deemed "Out of the Night" by the Night award.

Stephens stepped in as a late replacement for Hermes Franca against Joe Lauzon on February 7, 2009 at UFC Fight Night 17. In the second round, Lauzon defeated Stephens with an armbar.

Stephens was defeated by Gleison Tibau during his second straight fight on April 1, 2009 at UFC Fight Night: Conviction vs. Kampmann, Stephens was disarmed by him and loses his second straight match by unanimous vote.

Stephens was expected to return to the octagon on September 16, 2009, at UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs. Guillard, against UFC newcomer Ronnys Torres. Torres sustained an injury during preparations and was eventually replaced by Justin Buchholz. Stephens beat Buchholz after landing many big strikes and opening a deep gash on Buchholz's forehead, causing the doctor to withdraw the match midway through the first round. Due to his win, he was voted out of the Night award.

Stephens was supposed to face Nik Lentz on January 11, 2010, at UFC Fight Night 20. Stephens, on the other hand, was forced to leave the game due to a layoff.

Stephens defeated Sam Stout by a split decision on May 8, 2010 at UFC 113. He won the match by a split decision. He received the Fight of the Night award for his efforts after this win.

Stephens lost on a split decision to Melvin Guillard on September 25, 2010.

Marcus Davis appeared at UFC 125 on January 1, 2011. Stephens came out more aggressive in the third round and ended Davis with a KO win. Because of his victory, he was voted out of the Night Award.

On June 4, 2011, Stephens was supposed to meet Jonathan Brookins in the Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale. However, Brookins was forced to leave the game due to a fractured wrist and was replaced by Danny Downes. After dominating both three rounds, Stephens defeated Downes by unanimous vote.

At UFC 136, Stephens met Anthony Pettis on October 8, 2011. Pettis defeated Stephens by a split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

Stephens converted an injured Yves Edwards against Donald Cerrone on May 15, 2012 at UFC on Fuel TV: Korean Zombie vs. Poirier The battle was decided by a unanimous decision.

Stephens was set to meet Yves Edwards at UFC on FX 5 on October 5, 2012. However, the match was postponed due to Stephens' detention on the day of the alleged assault charge that goes back to 2011. The brawl took place on December 8, 2012 at UFC on Fox 5. Edwards was defeated in the first round by being the first fighter to ever stop Stephens by strikes.

Stephens made his Featherweight debut against Estevan Payan, the promotion's newcomer, on May 25, 2013 at UFC 160. He was voted unanimously in the bloody contest.

Stephens was supposed to meet Rony Jones at UFC Fight Night 29 on October 9, 2013. However, Jason pulled out of the match due to an injury (lumbar hernia). The match finally took place on November 9, 2013 at UFC Fight Night 32. Stephens prevailed in the first round after being knocked out early.

On December 12, 2015, Stephens faced Max Holloway at UFC 194. He lost the battle by a unanimous decision.

On May 29, 2016, Stephens faced Renan Baro, the former UFC Bantamweight champion, at UFC Fight Night 88. By a majority vote, he defeated the back-and-forth confrontation. Both participants were given Fight of the Night accolades for their appearances.

On November 12, 2016, Stephens met Frankie Edgar, the former UFC Lightweight Champion. He was disqualified by a unanimous decision.

Stephens was on Fox 24 on Thursday as he met Renato Moicano. He was disqualified by a split decision in the fight.

On September 9, 2017, Stephens met Gilbert Melendez at UFC 215. He was the victor in the fight by unanimous decision. Both participants were given Fight of the Night awards for their appearance.

Stephens took on Doo Ho Choi on January 14, 2018 at UFC Fight Night: Stephens vs. Choi. In the second round, he won the battle via TKO. Both participants were awarded Fight of the Night.

Stephens met Josh Emmett at UFC on Fox 28 on February 24, 2018. In round two, he won the fight by being knocked out. Since winning, he received the Performance of the Night Award.

Stephens next appeared at UFC Featherweight Champion and 2-time UFC Featherweight Champion José Aldo on July 28, 2018 at UFC on Fox: Alvarez vs. Poirier 2. In the first round, he lost via TKO.

Stephens met Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 235 on March 2, 2019. He lost the election by unanimous decision.

In the main event at UFC on ESPN+ 17, Stephens met Yair Rodrn on September 21, 2019. Stephens was unintentionally swatted in the left eye, rendering Stephens unable to continue.

In a rematch on October 18, 2019, the Stephens defeated Yair Rodrón in a rematch at UFC on ESPN 6. He lost the election by unanimous decision. He was given the Fight of the Night award for his fight this week.

Stephens was supposed to meet Calvin Kattar at UFC 249. However, Dana White, the president of UFC, reported on April 9, that the show had been postponed, and that the match would take place on May 9, 2020. Stephens lost weight at the weigh-ins on May 8, weighing in at 150.5 pounds, 4.5 pounds over the non-title featherweight maximum. As a result, the match became a catchweight brawl, and Stephens was fined 20% of his money. Stephens lost the first round after being a success and out-striking Kattar in the first round, but they did not lose the fight due to a technical error.

Stephens was supposed to face Arnold Allen on November 7, 2020 at UFC on ESPN: Santos vs. Teixeira. Stephens was later forced to cancel from the event due to injury.

Stephens was expected to return to the lightweight division for the first time since 2012 to face Drakkar Klose at UFC on ESPN 22. However, on the day of the competition, it was revealed that the bout was cancelled due to Klose's back injury when being pushed by Stephens at the weigh-ins.

On Saturday, Stephens defeated Mateusz Gamrot at UFC on ESPN: Makhachev vs. Moisés, 2021. In round one, he was disqualified due to submission.

Stephens' deal was not renewed after his first fight for the promotion in late-January 2022.

Stephens signed with PFL for the 2022 season to compete in their Lightweight division after his deal was not renewed by the UFC.

Stephens faced Clay Collard on April 23, 2022 at PFL 1, in his first appearance. Stephens lost the match by unanimous decision in a back-and-forth fight.

Stephens was defeated at PFL 4 on June 17, 2022. He was the champion of the match by a split decision.

Stephens will face Natan Schulte in his PFL debut on November 25, 2022 at PFL 10.
