Early life
Jennifer Kirk was born in Newton, Massachusetts. She was a gymnast before starting to skate until the age of nine. She also studied ballet and appeared with the Boston Ballet once more.
Personal life
Pat Harris, Kirk's mother, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 1999. She died in August 2001. Kirk was forced to leave due to the death of her mother. "Although I still love skating, my enthusiasm and admiration for the competitive aspect of the sport has dwindled after my mother's death in 2001 and my nagging hip injuries." She openly admitted to her battle with eating disorders throughout her career and said it had been a contributing factor in her decision to quit in 2009. She also stated that disordered eating was a common among skaters, but that not enough was being done to solve the problem.
Career
Kirk became interested in skating and began training with mentors Evy and Mary Scotvold at the age of ten at the Skating Club of Boston. On the PBS show Zoom and Arthur, she was featured as a young up-and-coming skater. A piece of bone came from her pelvis and jutted into her hip flexor at 15, transforming her hip joint.
Kirk took home gold at the 2000 World Junior Championships. In 2002, she captured the Four Continents Championship. She ranked 15th in the short program at the 2002 World Championships before withdrawing due to a hip injury.
Kirk began to train with Richard Callaghan in Detroit during the 2002–03 season. She also dabbled in single skating with Fedor Andreev in the summer of 2003, describing it as amusing but demanding. Kirk and Frank Carroll were able to train at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, California, in the summer of 2004. Kirk earned the bronze medal at the 2004 US Championships. She withdrew from her first Grand Prix assignment due to an accident later this season. She finished 10th at the 2004 Cup of Russia and captured bronze at the 2005 Four Continents.
Kirk announced her retirement from competitive figure skating on September 7, 2005. She migrated to Boston, Massachusetts, where she worked as a mentor, but she later returned to Southern California.
