Taylor left Sweden for Hobbs in 2006, moving in with his grandmother. He determined that playing high school basketball in America would improve his college basketball skills, in addition to his desire to play at his father's alma mater. After a freshman season in which he averaged more than 30 points while leading Hobbs to a state championship, he quickly drew a lot of attention from NCAA Division I programs.
Taylor, who was named one of the country's top 150 students by ESPN, considered about half a dozen colleges before narrowing his choices to Vanderbilt and Texas, eventually choosing Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt. He was one of three top-150 recruits signed by Commodores head coach Kevin Stallings in 2008.

College career
"One of the most pleasant surprises in last season's mediocre SEC [Southeastern Conference] was Jeff Taylor's freshman season." On his way to SEC All-Freshman awards, he averaged 12.2 points and 6.2 rebounds. However, he showed one weakness in a otherwise excellent year by shooting just 27% from three-point range.
His sophomore season saw some improvement, but there was also some reason to be concerned; one scout said near the end of the season, "while he has been successful in several ways, he has regressed in others as well." Taylor's scoring average increased to 13.3 per game, but his rebounding was modestly poor to 5.2 per game. The most apparent issue was his perimeter shooting, which resulted in a decrease; he attempted only 11 three-pointers and missed only one. Nonetheless, he was selected by the league's coaches to the All-SEC second team and was also assigned to the SEC All-Defensive Team.
He continued to play every position on the floor but center, and was often called on to protect any position on the floor except center, while being named to the SEC All-Defensive Team in 2010-11. Taylor also shot his three-point shooting to a more respectable 46.5 percent while shooting more than twice as many shots from behind the arc as in his first two seasons combined. He was also named second team All-SEC after averaging 14.7 points and 5.5 rebounds.
Taylor was widely considered to be a prime candidate for the 2011 NBA draft, mainly because of his athleticism and defensive abilities. However, he chose to remain at Vanderbilt for his senior season in 2011–12. The Commodores' decision to return, along with those of fellow actor John Jenkins and Festus Ezeli, made them a likely preseason top-10 pick.

Taylor was chosen by the Charlotte Bobcats with the 31st overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft. He signed his first professional deal with the Bobcats on July 13, 2012.
Taylor scored a career high 16 points in a 91-101 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on November 23, 2012.
Taylor would miss the remainder of the season with a torn right Achilles tendon, according to an article on December 21, 2013. In 24.2 minutes per game, he had been averaging 8.0 points and 2.3 rebounds.
Taylor was supposed to return to action with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, the Hornets' affiliate team, after serving out his 24-game suspension by the NBA that had been handed down in September 2014. However, with the maximum number of four NBA players on loan to the Mad Ants already, the Hornets could transfer Taylor to the Austin Spurs, the San Antonio Spurs' one-to-one D-League affiliate. On January 9, 2015, he was recalled by the Hornets.
The Hornets decided not to extend a qualifying offer to Taylor on June 30, 2015, making him an unrestricted free agent.
