Career
After graduating from NYU Film School, Baena moved to Los Angeles to begin building his career. He spent time as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis, filming on a number of projects.
Baena took up as an assistant editor for writer-director David O. Russell after working with Zemeckis. A minor car collision injured one of Baena's eyes after a year and a half of working together. Russell began discussing story ideas with Baena partly to keep his spirits up and by the time he recovered from that. The two writers ended up working on four scripts together.
I Heart Huckabees, Russell's fourth script, was one of those four scripts. Baena started to concentrate on writing and penned the zombie story Life After Beth, which would be his first film appearance as a director.
Joshy had intended for his debut as a director, but actor and collaborator Adam Phelp had to cancel due to personal reasons. Baena had intended to work on Life After Beth, a magazine that he had started writing in 2003.
The Little Hours, Baena's new film, was released in 2017. The film stars Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Kate Micucci, Aubrey Plaza, John C. Reilly, and Molly Shannon, as well as many cameos.
Horse Girl, Baena's film scripted with Alison Brie, who appears in the film, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020.
