Jean-Philippe Collard Career

Career

Collard was born in Marne, North of France, in 1948, to a musical family. At age five, he started playing the piano for the first time. He travelled to Berlin in 1960 after being invited by the Jeunes musicales de France to compete in the International Competition for young pianists. He received First Prize at the Paris Conservatory of Music at the age of 16. He is also a recipient of the Gabriel Fauré Award. In addition, Collard has been awarded a First Prize from the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition, the Albert Roussel Award, and the Cziffra International Competition.

He appeared at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 1973 on his debut in Paris. Critics in Paris were ecstatic. "He has all the right qualities that make him a singer of the highest order; his style and his sensibility are like the flower of virtuosity." Le Figaro, February 1973.

He is regarded as one of France's top exponents. Collard made his American debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Seiji Ozawa. The San Francisco Chronicle praised the result.

Collard's discography includes Rachmaninov's Études-Tableaux and the Brahms Hungarian Dances (with pianist Michel Beroff), each named as Best Concerto Recording by Gramophone magazine; and the Chausson Concert, Op. 21 (with Augustin Dumay and the Muir String Quartet) who won the Grand Prix du Disque. He has recorded all five Saint-Sarens piano recitals with André Previn and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the first recordings of Mozart's arrangements of the six French melodies with baritone José van Dam. A disc of Chopin's Ballades and his third sonata, as well as a Liszt recital disc containing the B minor sonata are among the recordings on sale.

He is the Artistic Director of the Flâneries musicales de Reims.
