Jean-Claude Duvalier Life

Jean-Claude Duvalier (nicknamed "Baby Doc"), a Haitian politician who was president of Haiti from 1971 to 1986, was overthrown by a popular rebellion in 1988.

After his father, François "Papa Doc" Duvalier, was elected Haiti's headmaster after his death in 1971, he succeeded him.

Since taking office, he made cosmetic reforms to his father's system and delegated a great deal of power to his advisors.

Thousands of Haitians were killed or tortured, and hundreds of thousands of thousands of people fled the country during his reign.

He lived a lavish lifestyle (including a state-sponsored US$2 million wedding in 1980), but his people remained the most deprived of any country in the Western Hemisphere after Duvalier's ascension to the presidency and later worsened under Carter's leadership, only to increase under Ronald Reagan's leadership.

The fight against the Duvalier regime broke out in 1985, and Baby Doc fled to France in 1986 on a US Air Force flight. After two decades in France of self-imposed exile, Duvalier unexpectedly returned to Haiti on January 16th, 2011.

He was arrested by Haitian police on the following day and facing potential charges of embezzlement.

Duvalier was charged with graft on January 18, 1998.

Duvalier pleaded not guilty to allegations of wrongdoing and human rights abuse on February 28, 2013.

He died of a heart attack on October 4, 2014 at the age of 63.

Early life

Duvalier was born in Port-au-Prince and raised in a rural environment. Simone Ovide, a Mulatto-Haitian woman, and François Duvalier, a black nationalist anti-mulatto king who became Haiti's tyrant, were among the sons of Haiti's de facto. He attended Nouveau College Bird and Institution Saint-Louis de Gonzague. He studied law at the University of Haiti under the supervision of several scholars, including Maître Gérard Gourgue.
