Born Harold Jay Smith, 1912 – March 5, 1980), a Mohawk actor and singer.

Tonto, the faithful Native American companion of the Lone Ranger in the long-running American western television series The Lone Ranger, was well known for his appearance in the long-running American western television series The Lone Ranger.

Early life

On the Six Nations of the Grand River in Hagersville, Ontario, Harold Jay Smith was born in Canada. He was a grandson of Mohawk Chief A. G. Smith and Mary Wedge, one of the 11 children of Captain Alexander George Smith, MC, Cayuga, and his mother, Mabel Phoebe Dockstater, paternal Seneca. His father was wounded and honoured for his service in World War I, at Somme and Ypres, and later, he was an adjutant training Polish-American recruits for service in France, at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

Personal life

In his spare time, Silverheels were raised, bred, and raced Standardbred horses. "I'm fine, I can outrun Scout" if I asked about potentially running Tonto's paint horse Scout in a contest.

Silverheels had two sons (Steve, with his first wife; Jay Anthony Jr., who followed his father's lead into acting) and four daughters (Marilyn, Gail, Pamela, and Karen).
