Jack Scully in the Australian soap opera Neighbours, Kevin, Mark Mitcham in the internationally produced New Zealand television series Top of the Lake, Matthew Keller, and Detective Ben Wesley in the Canadian television series Mary Kills People. In It Chapter Two, a sequel to the 2017 horror film It, based on the 1986 novel of the same name, Ryan made his breakthrough playing adult Ben Hanscom.

He appeared as "Glen" in the "Scallywag Pirates" (2000) and had a minor role in Xena: Warrior Princess under Jay Bunyan's name. Jack Scully's role in the Australian soap opera Neighbours from late 2002 to January 2005 is well-known.

In the famous Australian drama, Sea Patrol, Ryan played Seaman William "Billy" Webb aka Spider from 2007 to 2009.

Ryan has appeared on stage with John Cleese and toured internationally with The Packer, a legendary solo performance written by NZ/Niuean playwright Dianna Fuemana.

Ryan starred Kevin in the New Zealand comedy/drama series Go Girls from 2009 to 2012. He appeared on the Australian comedy/drama series Offspring in 2011. In 2011, Ryan guest appeared on the American science fiction film Terra Nova as a murderer. Ryan used an American accent for this role.
