Jay Mathews Career

Career

Mathews has been with the Washington Post for over a decade as a writer writing news articles and books on China, disability rights, the stock market, and education. For the Washington Post, he writes the Class Struggle blog.

For the Washington Post (and before that for Newsweek), he has compiled the annual list of "America's Most Challenging High Schools." He created the "challenge index" by determining how many people take Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and the Advanced Certificate of Education (A) at a school each year, broken by the number of graduating seniors. The dismissal of top-performing schools is outlawed.

He served as the first Bureau Chief in Beijing, 1979-1980, and Los Angeles. He spent several weeks in Beijing covering Tiananmen Square at the time and has since questioned the commonly held media story of a student massacre inside Tiananmen Square, claiming that bloody scenes occurred outside the Square rather than simply involving students.
