On Tuesday, YouTube was hit by a worldwide outage for at least one hour. Users reported issues with the website, app, and YouTube TV, the company's subscription service. As of 2023, YouTube has more than 2.7 billion active users, but the number affected by the outage is unknown.

When the site was launched in 2005, YouTube creators Jawed Karim (top right) and Steven Chen (bottom right) had very different visions for the site (inset). They even had a slogan: 'Tune in, Hook up, Hook up,' Karim said. They eventually decided to abandon their plans and launch it as merely a video sharing portal, with the first video (left) of Karim at San Diego Zoo. In 2006, Chen, Karim, and co-founder Chad Hurley sold the website to Google for $1.65 billion.
