Javed Akhtar Career

Career as scriptwriter

There was no such thing as a writer for the screenplay, story, and dialogue in the 1970s, nor were the writers given any credit in the scripts. Rajesh Khanna is credited with giving Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar their first chance as screenplay writers by providing them with jobs in Haathi Mere Saathi. In an interview, Javed Akhtar said that he went to Salimsaab one day and that Mr. Devar had given him a large signing sum with which he would pay for his bungalow, Aashirwad. However, the film was a remake, and the original's script was far from being satisfactory. "He told us that if we could set right the script, he'd make sure we had both money and credit."

Andaz' script was their first big success, followed by Adhikar (1971), Haathi Mere Saathi, and Seeta Aur Geeta (1972). They had hits with Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), Zanjeer (1974), Deewai (1975), Don (1978), Bhashul (1978), Zamana (1985), and Mr. India (1987). They've collaborated in 24 films, including two Kannada films, Premada Kanike and Raja Nanna Raja.

20 of the 24 films they wrote were hits. Aakhri Dao (1975), Immaan Dharam (1977), Kaala Patthar (1979) and Shaan (1980) were among the scripts that were not successful at the box office, but they were not popular at the box office. Despite the fact that they stopped writing in 1982 due to ego issues, some of the scripts they wrote were turned into hit films later, such as Zamana and Mr. India. Salim-Javed, who has been described as "the most influential scriptwriters of all time," is also known to be India's first scriptwriters to receive national attention.
