Playing career
He marketed himself as a hooker, but he started his career as a five-eighth. In round 1 1993 against the Western Suburbs at Campbelltown Stadium, Hetherington made his first grade debut for the Gold Coast. In his debut season as the Gold Coast finished last on the table and claimed the wooden spoon, Hetherington made 15 appearances.
In 1994, Hetherington joined Canterbury. In 1994, Hetherington lost to the Canberra Raiders in a Grand Final loss. Hetherington was a member of the Canterbury side that secured the 1995 premiership over Manly-Warringah in the grand final.
Hetherington played 27 games in the 1998 NRL season as Canterbury finished 9th on the table and qualified for the finals. Canterbury defeated Parramatta in the 1998 NRL Grand Final after winning four sudden death elimination matches in a row, including the club's historic preliminary final victory over rivals Parramatta, which is considered to be one of the best comebacks of all time. Canterbury scored three tries to bring the game to extra time before winning the match 32-20 after being 18-2 down with less than ten minutes remaining.
In the 1998 NRL grand final loss to the Brisbane Broncos, he appeared at hooker for Canterbury. In 1998, Hetherington was also selected for Australia.
