Janko Matuska Life

Janko Matka (born January 1821 - 11 January 1877) was a Slovak writer, critic, occasional playwright, and court clerk.

He is best known as the author of the Slovakian national anthem Nad Tatrou sa bl. ("Lightning Over the Tatras"), based on the melody of Slovak folk song Kopala studienku.

Life

Janko Matka was born in Doln, Kubn, Hungary, and later as part of the Kingdom of Hungary. He began attending school in the Czechoslovak Language and Literature Center, later at the Gymnázium of Gemer (Sajógómör) and then continued on to study at the prestigious Lutheran Lyceum of Pressburg (preparatory high school and college), where he later studied in the Institute of Czechoslovak Language and Literature while majoring in theology. The only professor teaching courses at the university at the time, udovt tr, was dismissed in December 1843 by the kingdom's authorities, who protested his pro-Slovak demonstrations. When he and other students became alarmed over the subsequent refusals of their appeals to the school board to reverse t'r's dismissal, 23-year-old Janko Matka wrote "Lightning Over the Tatras." In March 1844, about two dozen students, including Matka, decided to leave the lceum in protest. Matka decided to take his final exams at the Lutheran gymnasium in Tisovec (Tiszolc). He lived in Orava (rva) for the majority of his adult life, and stopped writing after the 1848 Hungarian Revolution. He served in government departments from 1850 to 1875, and was Clerk of the County Court in Doln Kubn. He died in Doln, Kubn, the day after his 56th birthday and was buried.
