Fully three quarters of voters say climate activists who vandalize artworks should face charges

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 5, 2023
According to our poll, Republicans and Democrats alike want to see climate activists who destroy priceless masterpieces' money back to face allegations and even prison time. According to a survey of nearly 1,400 Americans, 75% agreed with tough police action against those who deface masterpieces, such as the two artists who smeared paint on a priceless Degas sculpture in Washington, DC, in April. The findings came as the group behind the demonstration, Declare Emergency, planned to dramatically raise the number of demonstrations, publicity stunts, and highway blockages that took place this summer.

In Washington, D.C., climate activists have been charged with smearing paint on a priceless statue

On Friday, Tim Martin and Joanna Smith, both 53, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime and causing injury to an art exhibit. Martin and Smith were accused of smearing paint from water bottles onto the exhibit and then smearing it onto the case and base of Degas' Little Dancer, Age Fourteen, last month.

Despite the destruction of the masterpiece, a climate campaigner BRAGS about the smearing paint on the priceless Degas statue

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 23, 2023
Declare Emergency's publicity stunt damaged the fragile clay, wood, and beeswax statue, as well as keeping hundreds of workers occupied on expensive repairs that took 11 days to complete. Hundreds of workers, including carpenters, registrars, art handlers, conservators, and imaging consultants were involved in the restoration and clearing up, which cost the taxpayer-funded gallery at a considerable price. As police investigated the scene, Gallery 3 was closed for the remainder of the day, and the statue wasn't open to public view until May 8. Its climate-controlled security case needed extensive repairs. Any movement, whether by vibration created when the plexiglass roof is struck or if the sculpture is physically relocated to another location,' said the spokeswoman.
