Jan Sterling Life

Jane Sterling Adriance, born Jane Sterling Adriance, 1921 – March 26, 2004) was an American film, television, and stage actress. Sterling was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1952 for her role in The High and the Mighty (1954).

In Billy Wilder's 1951 Ace in the Hole, her best result is often described as the "opportunistic wife" opposite Kirk Douglas.

Although her career in the 1960s ended, she continued to perform occasional television and theater roles.

Early life

Sterling was born in New York City and was the niece of Eleanor Ward (née Deans) and William Allen Adriance Jr., an architect and marketing executive. Ann "Mimi" Adriance, a model and businesswoman, was her younger sister. Jane grew up in a wealthy family and attended private schools before heading to Europe and South America with her family. She was educated in London and Paris by private tutors, and in London she attended Fay Compton's dramatic academy. She related of being sent airfare to fly back to the United States; seeing some lingerie she loved in a shop window, she used the remaining money to buy it and booked aboard a steamship, and then traded in the airfare and booked aboard a steamship. She discovered that the Hindenburg, the airship she had been booked on, had been destroyed in a massive fire upon arriving in New Jersey on May 6, 1937, midway through the voyage.
