Jan Remco Theodoor Campert (Spijkenisse, August 15, 1902 – January 12, 1943) was a journalist, theater critic, and writer who lived in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Campert was arrested during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II for helping the Jews. * He was interned in the Neuengamme concentration camp, where he died. Campert is best known for his poem "De achttien diegod" ("The Eighteen Dead"), which describes the execution of 18 resistance fighters (15 resistance fighters and three comunists) by the German occupant. * The poem, which was based on an account published in Het Parool, was clandestinely published in 1943 as a poetry card ("rijmprent") by what would become publishing house De Bezige Bij to raise funds to hide Jewish children. Remco Campert, a novelist and poet, was his father. He has been named after Jan Campert's award.
